Project Eco-FLOAT: “A Versatile Flotation Device for Supporting Eco-friendly Maritime Operations”
Funded by the Fusion Technology Development Programme 2025 of Xjenza Malta.
And any other projects undertaken by the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering
Applications are invited for a Research Support Officer (RSO) to carry out duties in relation to the Eco-FLOAT project, which is funded by Xjenza Malta and in which the University of Malta is the lead partner. The project is being undertaken by the Department of Mechanical Engineering in collaboration with the Department of Systems and Control Engineering and a Maltese industrial partner. The RSO may also be required to work on other projects undertaken by the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering.
Applicants must be in possession of a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. A sound background in Applied Mechanics and Thermofluids Engineering is essential. Applicants should also demonstrate experience in the use of Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software. Knowledge and/or experience in control systems, maritime or offshore engineering applications will be considered an asset.

The successful candidate will be given the opportunity to pursue a Master’s by Research degree or initiate a PhD degree in a topic related to the project.
The full-time post is for a period of up to 36 months.
The initial remuneration per annum, inclusive of any cost-of-living adjustment shall be €27,207.

Further Information
The project aims to develop and experimentally validate an innovative floating system for offshore and maritime applications, with particular emphasis on the design, engineering and testing of the floating structure and its associated mechanical systems. The research will involve aspects of mechanical design, applied mechanics, thermofluids engineering, control engineering and marine technology, with the overall objective of demonstrating the proposed technology through the development and testing of a prototype. The RSO may also be required to work on other projects undertaken by the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering.
The appointee will be expected to undertake the following tasks:
- contribute to the engineering design and development of the prototype, including the preparation of Computer-Aided Design (CAD) models and engineering drawings;
- support the manufacture, assembly, integration and experimental testing of the prototype;
- conduct research and contribute to the preparation of scientific publications and technical reports arising from the project;
- participate in project meetings, both online and face-to-face, and collaborate with project partners;
- assist in the preparation and delivery of workshops, demonstrations and other project-related activities and deliverables;
- assist in the analysis, interpretation and documentation of experimental and engineering data;
- perform any other tasks as instructed by the University of Malta.
The appointee will be expected to work at such places and during such hours as may be determined by the University authorities.
The selection procedure will involve:
- scrutiny of qualifications and experience claimed and supported by testimonials and/or certificates (copies to be included with the application);
- shortlisting; and
- an interview and / or extended interview.
The post is for a period of up to 36 months, which will be subject to a probationary period and to the provisions of the Statutes, Regulations and Bye-Laws of the University of Malta which are now or which may hereafter be in force.
