Research Support Specialist I - Department of Neurobiology & Behavior - College of Arts & Sciences

The Department of Neurobiology and Behavior (NB&B) was one of the very first departments to combine the study of animal behavior with its neural basis, based on the belief that the interface between them was one of great research potential. The interests of our faculty and students span all levels of organization, from single neurons to complex circuits to whole organisms and societies thereof.

The Oliva & Fernandez-Ruiz labs employ a multi-disciplinary approach, including the development and application of cutting-edge experimental and computational techniques, to understand the neural mechanisms that support learning and memory. We use large-scale electrophysiology and imaging to record hundreds to thousands of neurons across multiple brain areas in behaving rodents. To test the role of specific cell types and brain patterns we perform closed-loop optogenetic manipulations of neural activity, allowing refinement and updating of the theories guiding experiment. Overall, our research aims to understand the neural circuit mechanisms of cognitive functions in health and disease.

The Research Support Specialist will provide support with studies of brain activity in rodents and general lab management tasks. This involves carrying out experiments with rodents (surgery and recordings of brain signals on mice and/or rats) and communication with animal CARE for proper compliance with animal protocol activities. In addition, it involves supporting PIs tasks related to lab organization, ordering of supplies and submission of reimbursements as well as communication with department administrative team. Other responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Maintain overall laboratory order and organization.
  • Assist with expenses/accounts management and reimbursements.
  • Oversee animal colonies and communicate with CARE about lab needs within the colony.
  • Assist with research, including animal experiments and preprocessing / analyzing research data.
  • Assist in preparing data for publication in papers, grant proposals, and scientific presentations.
  • Adhere to lab safety protocols with a solid understanding of laboratory safety techniques and procedures.

This is an on-site full-time (40 hours per week) 12-month appointment with the possibility for extension, depending on available funding and successful performance.

Required Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree and relevant work experience of more than 2 years, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Ability to work effectively with hazardous chemicals and biohazards; be familiar with and follow safety protocol and procedures at all times. Ability to occasionally work irregular hours. Demonstrated ability to multitask and balance priorities when necessary. Must be able to carry out experiments to completion with moderate guidance. Strong attention to detail. Must be able to work independently as well as in a team environment to accomplish required tasks.

Preferred Qualifications: Previous experience with lab managing, animal care, data entry skills, good organizational skills, and punctuality are desirable.

Anticipated start date is approximately 11/01/2025. Applications will be accepted through Monday, September 22nd. Your complete application will include BOTH cover letter and resume.
