Job Description:

Budget Title: Lead Programmer/Analyst (SL-3)

Salary: $60,000 - $85,000 (commensurate with experience)

The Research Computing Team within Information Technology Services focuses on supporting University Researchers. We work in a friendly and collaborative environment with faculty, staff, and students to provide all researchers with the necessary technologies, enabling them to focus more on their research.

Reporting to the Research Computing Support Manager, the Research System Administrator designs and implements hardware and software solutions in research environments, with a focus on security and compliance. This role serves as a technical resource for faculty and researchers by identifying appropriate technology solutions and providing comprehensive support, including installation, configuration, troubleshooting, and maintenance of research technologies.

As a member of the Research Computing Team, the Research Systems Administrator will be responsible for:

  • Operating, maintaining, and upgrading the ITS Research Storage service - run on Linux servers using open-source Ceph, Samba, and OwnCloud Infinite Scale software.
  • Creating and maintaining Linux & Windows virtual machines and desktops within our VergeIO Environment.
  • Collaborating, and supporting researchers seeking services or general help utilizing various communication tools, including the ITS ticketing system (TeamDynamix).
  • Designing and creating new research services, such as enabling confidential research by creating a secure environment on campus (NIST 800-171, CMMC).
  • Collaborating with ITS staff and research faculty to review security requirements for research data use agreements or grants.
  • Drafting, reviewing, and updating policies/procedures to fulfill SOC 2 requirements.
  • Providing required evidence to external auditors meeting SOC 2 compliance needs.
  • Building, maintaining, and analyzing dashboards for auditing, performance, and general security purposes.
  • Working closely with the Research Support team manager as well as the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) to ensure compliance with all relevant policies and procedures relating to secure research.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field OR Associate's degree in Computer Science or a related field with a minimum of one year of relevant experience
  • Experience installing, configuring, and maintaining operating systems such as Ubuntu, Windows, or other Linux/Unix-based systems, either manually or using automated processes
  • Experience working with core operating system concepts, including user and file management, networking (e.g., IP addresses, ports), storage systems, and software installation and maintenance
  • Familiarity with computer security practices, including role-based access control (RBAC), firewalls, data encryption, and backup and recovery processes
  • Ability to ensure data confidentiality and adhere to regulatory compliance standards such as the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
  • Experience delivering customer service and technical support

Preferred:

  • Experience with open-source storage and file-sharing tools such as Ceph, Samba, and/or OwnCloud Infinite Scale
  • Familiarity with regulatory compliance frameworks, such as SOC 2, NIST 800-171, CMMC, or HIPAA
  • Practical experience working with compute, storage, networking, and security services in on-premise or cloud environments, including platforms such as VergeIO, VMware, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud Platform (GCP)
  • Experience supporting or conducting research in a higher education setting
  • Proficiency in at least one scripting or programming language, such as Python, Bash, PowerShell, or PHP
  • Experience using version control systems, including Git and platforms such as GitHub, GitLab, or Bitbucket
