Full-Time Research & Teaching Assistant, PhD Candidate – Ghent University Global Campus

Department: Department of Environmental Technology, Food Technology, and Molecular Biotechnology (KR01); Department of Electronics and Information Systems (TW06)

Degree: Master’s degree in computer science/engineering, informatics, electrical engineering, applied mathematics, biomedical engineering, or related field

Contract: 1 + 1 + 2 + 2 years (max 6 years, renewable on positive evaluation)

Job Position

Ghent University Global Campus in South Korea seeks a Research & Teaching Assistant in biotech data science. Position is full-time, renewable up to 6 years. PhD candidate enrolls at Center for Biosystems and Biotech Data Science, with opportunity to visit home campus in Ghent (IDLab – ELIS). Non-Korean applicants receive rent-free housing and travel budget.

50% time on teaching (supervising sessions, developing materials, grading, supervising projects). 50% on research in deep machine learning for biomedical image understanding or biomolecule design. Must prepare doctoral proposal within 6 months.

Target degree: Doctor in Computer Science Engineering from Ghent University. More info: Faculty page, Doctoral research.

Job Description

  • Assist in teaching Informatics, Bioinformatics, Bachelor’s Project at GUGC, Korea.
  • Conduct research in deep ML for biomedical image understanding/biomolecule design.
  • Support R&D projects, collaborations.
  • Present and publish research.

Candidate Profile

  • MSc by June 2026 in CS/Eng, Informatics, EE, Applied Math, BME or related.
  • Excellent record, strong programming (C++, Python, Rust, R; GitHub).
  • Experience in scientific computing/ML (PyTorch/TF/Keras plus).
  • Motivated for ML in biotech; analytical skills; independent; English proficient (TOEFL 80+).
  • International team fit; visa rules for non-Koreans.

  • Salary: Annual base 27,375,000 KRW (monthly 2,281,250 KRW gross)
