Job Description
Led by principal investigator Anthony-Samuel LaMantia, Ph.D., the LaMantia Lab at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute, focuses on the developmental mechanisms that build neural circuits for distinct behaviors. Dr. LaMantia's goal is to use insights into basic development and genetics to address the causes and help develop new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for the broad range of developmental disorders that compromise the brain as well as other organ systems. These disorders result in a lifetime of health challenges for the affected infants and children, as well as for their families and caregivers.
The laboratory is seeking a full-time Research Assistant to join the team. The successful candidate should have at least a Bachelor's degree in biology or a related field. The candidate will also be expected to have knowledge of, or the capacity to acquire proficiency in, molecular and cell biology techniques, including DNA and RNA biology, DNA genotyping (standard PCR), quantitative PCR (qPCR), basic protein biochemistry and cell culture procedures. The successful candidate will be expected to participate in laboratory projects involving the application of basic molecular and cellular biology techniques as well as data analysis. These projects include working with developing and adult mice, as well as primary neuronal cell cultures and cell lines. In addition, the position requires assisting in the management of timed breeding of transgenic and mutant mouse lines and genotyping offspring for breeding stock. This position will require basic organizational skills, including tracking workflow, maintaining detailed records and archiving data. The successful candidate should be detail oriented, keeping careful records while conducting research. They should also be flexible and enjoy a fast-paced research environment.

- Experience in research lab with rodent animal research.
- Experience with basic molecular techniques.
Preferred Qualifications
- Coursework or training in Biology, Neuroscience, Chemistry, Engineering, or a related scientific field with an emphasis on laboratory sciences.
- Experience with lab project management.
- Demonstrated communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to follow instructions
