Research Technician I/II

Overview

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center is an independent, nonprofit organization providing adult cancer treatment and groundbreaking research focused on cancer and infectious diseases. Based in Seattle, Fred Hutch is the only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center in Washington.

With a track record of global leadership in bone marrow transplantation, HIV/AIDS prevention, immunotherapy and COVID-19 vaccines, Fred Hutch has earned a reputation as one of the world's leading cancer, infectious disease and biomedical research centers. Fred Hutch operates eight clinical care sites that provide medical oncology, infusion, radiation, proton therapy and related services, and network affiliations with hospitals in five states. Together, our fully integrated research and clinical care teams seek to discover new cures to the world's deadliest diseases and make life beyond cancer a reality.

At Fred Hutch we value collaboration, compassion, determination, excellence, innovation, integrity and respect. Our mission is directly tied to the humanity, dignity and inherent value of each employee, patient, community member and supporter. Our commitment to learning across our differences and similarities make us stronger. We seek employees who bring different and innovative ways of seeing the world and solving problems.

The Simeonov Lab at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center is seeking a full-time Research Technician I or II to join our interdisciplinary team studying cancer evolution, metastasis, and therapy resistance. Cancer is inherently challenging to study because many of its most critical features, such as metastasis and drug resistance, arise from extremely rare, unpredictable events and cells. We need powerful, next-generation tools to better understand and ultimately treat cancer. Our group develops and applies cutting-edge molecular recorder technologies that enable cells to log aspects of their own biology directly into their DNA. These tools are used in combination with single-cell sequencing and experimental cancer models to uncover the molecular principles governing key elements of cancer evolution.

This position is ideal for a highly motivated, recent graduate or early-career scientist interested in gaining hands-on experience in cancer biology, synthetic biology, and high-throughput single-cell technologies. We are looking for a meticulous, curious, and driven individual who is excited to contribute to a collaborative and rigorous scientific environment.

Responsibilities

Working under the direction of the Principal Investigator and in collaboration with other lab members to carry out the following job duties:

  • Assist with molecular cloning and engineering of CRISPR-based lineage recording systems
  • Perform mammalian cell culture, lentiviral transduction, and cell line development
  • Support in vivo experiments using mouse models of cancer (e.g., tumor transplantation, tissue collection)
  • Prepare samples for single-cell sequencing (e.g., 10x Genomics)
  • Conduct tissue harvesting and flow cytometry
  • Help organize and maintain lab stocks, databases, and protocols
  • Record, analyze, and present data with careful attention to detail
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Research Technician I:

  • Bachelor's degree in related scientific field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated scientific knowledge in the area of study.
  • Demonstrated basic laboratory skills.

Research Technician II:

  • Bachelor's degree in related scientific field or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 2 years of experience working in a lab outside of school coursework

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, physics, computer science or related field
  • Experience with molecular biology techniques (e.g., PCR, cloning, gel electrophoresis) and/or mammalian cell culture
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Strong motivation to learn new techniques and contribute to a team-based research environment
  • Experience with flow cytometry or high-throughput sequencing
  • Experience with mouse handling or a willingness to learn
  • Familiarity with basic data analysis in R or Python

Application Instructions

Please include a CV and a brief statement (1-2 paragraphs) describing your research experience, technical skills, and interest in the lab's work.

Research Technician I: The hourly pay range for this position is from $23.33 to $33.21 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.

Research Technician II: The hourly pay range for this position is from $27.01 to $38.45 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications
