Position Highlights

The Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine is seeking a highly skilled Research Technician III to support advanced laboratory operations with minimal supervision. The ideal candidate will bring specialized expertise in the culture of human colonoids and virology and demonstrate the ability to independently troubleshoot and propose innovative solutions to experimental challenges. This position includes growing and manipulating human cytomegalovirus.

Duties & Responsibilities

Perform complex experimental procedures, including:

  • Growth of human colonic epithelium in culture.
  • Performing immunolabeling and confocal microscopy for high-resolution cellular imaging.
  • Perform biochemical and molecular assays such as immunoblotting and quantitative PCR.
  • Produce normal and mutant virus for infection in vitro.
  • Use high level of knowledge of methods and protocols of molecular biology, biochemistry, and cell biology to support data collection, analysis, and interpretation.

Protocol Design and Refinements:

  • With minimal supervisor guidance, refines, adapts, and makes decisions to switch experiment parameters in response to situational demands of experiments.
  • Assists in preparing experimental designs, technical protocols and techniques, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

Record-keeping, Analysis, and Presentations:

  • Communicates effectively all aspects of experiments with PI or other laboratory staff.
  • Keeps accurate and detailed records of experiments, results, and enters data in laboratory databases.
  • Catalogs specimens and samples.
  • Performs independent analysis and interpretation of data for investigator and prepares summary reports.
  • Assists in preparation of data for publication and/or presentations at scholarly meetings.
  • Assist in troubleshooting of unexpected technical obstacles.

Operational Support:

  • Orders and catalogs laboratory supplies and supports laboratory operations.
  • Assist in maintaining laboratory equipment and related records.
  • Operating, maintaining and troubleshoot highly specialized and sophisticated scientific apparatuses, equipment, and instruments for cardiovascular research and the study of heart disease and the ryanodine receptor.
  • Acts as a non-supervisory team leader for lower-level research associates and undergraduate student researchers on lab operations and procedures

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Demonstrated experience with colonoid culture techniques and confocal microscopy
  • Demonstrated knowledge and prior experience with the role and regulation of cytomegalovirus (CMV) in intestinal disease.
  • Ability to maintain organized protocols, data, and biological samples with clear, detailed documentation of experimental procedures to ensure scientific rigor and reproducibility.
  • Ability to analyze and solve problems requiring interpretation and independent judgment. Must be capable of proposing innovative solutions for managerial review, evaluating the effectiveness of programs, projects, or systems within the assigned group or function, and making necessary adjustments.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with peers and collaborators within assigned work groups, facilitating information exchange with other teams as required. May be responsible for fielding and responding to requests from others within the organization based on the nature of the role.
  • Ability to work independently under minimal supervision, using sound judgment to determine best approaches and applying creativity to achieve optimal results. Must be able to adapt to new situations, with decisions that may influence operations and outcomes within the employee's job function (generalists) or specific work area (specialists).

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or high school diploma equivalency is required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A Bachelors degree in Life Sciences is preferred.
