Research Technician (Part-time 0.5 FTE, fixed term until 29 May 2027)

Applications are invited for the post of Research Technician to assist in the research under the supervision of Dr Gary Rowley, School of Biological Sciences, to undertake a BBSRC-funded molecular microbiology project.

The aim of the project is to determine how non-coding small RNAs (sRNAs) regulate bacterial denitrification. The project will combine functional genomics, microbial cell biology and biochemistry to advance our understanding of the regulatory network controlling this important biogeochemical pathway. This research is critical if we are to prevent bacterial emissions of the potent climate-damaging greenhouse gas, nitrous oxide (N2O).

You should have an MSc in microbiology or a related discipline and experience with a range of microbial and/or molecular techniques. Good communication and organisation skills with the ability to work independently are also required. You will be an integral member of the research group and play an important role in all aspects of the project including publications and conference attendance.

In this role, you will:

  • Contribute to ongoing molecular microbiology research within the group.
  • Perform a range of routine laboratory tasks (orders, stock maintenance).
  • Co-ordinate general laboratory housekeeping.
  • Ensure health and safety regulations are being followed and support updating COSHH forms and Risk Assessments.
  • Supervise and instruct more junior researchers including interns, undergraduate and postgraduate students.

This part-time (0.5 FTE) post is available from 22 September 2025 on a fixed term basis until 29 May 2027.

Further information on our great benefits package, including 34 days annual leave inclusive of Bank Holidays and additional University Customary days (pro rata for part-time), can be found on our benefits page.

The University holds an Athena Swan Silver Institutional Award in recognition of our advancement towards gender equality.
