Duties & Responsibilities:
The lab technician will conduct/assist animal work including surgery, drug administration, behavior tests, perfusion, and maintaining experimental cell cultures, assist other staff and students in the completion of protocols such as tissue processing, histological and immunohistological staining, Western blotting, microscopic analysis, etc. Other responsibilities include ordering supplies, maintaining the inventory laboratory supplies, and disposal of biohazardous materials.
Core Responsibilities:
- Animal handling including all surgical procedures, drug administration, behavior testing, tissue collection, and processing.
- Tissue processing, immunostaining, and light microscopic stereological quantification.
- General lab management: chemical and animal inventories; orders for supplies for all lab personnel; routine maintenance of lab equipment and lab cleanliness.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications
- A Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Neuroscience, or a related field is required. Experience in a biology research lab is preferred.
- Experience in working with experimental models and cell cultures.
- Background in cell biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, immunology.
- Ability to work independently.
- Proficient in basic computer skills, including word processing and spreadsheets.
- Good written and oral communication skills.
- Demonstrated experience working in and fostering an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from various backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.

Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of safe laboratory practices is required for all job duties.
Salary Range: $37,500 - $50,000
FLSA Exemption Status: non-exempt
