Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity
An opportunity has arisen for a Research Technologist – Health Data Science to support researchers, students, and stakeholders in accessing and applying specialised health data methodologies. In this role, you will contribute your technical expertise to the University’s Health Data Platform by assisting with the management of secure health data, supporting approved research projects, and ensuring all processes align with privacy, ethical, and data sovereignty requirements. You will play a key part in the operational planning and management of the Platform’s specialist facilities, providing user induction, technical support, and maintaining standard operating procedures. A significant focus of the role is overseeing the safe and secure transfer, preparation, and integration of large health datasets, including data linkage, cohort development, documentation of data provenance, and investigation of anomalies for quality control. This includes maintaining clear data documentation (data dictionaries and cohort specifications), using reproducible workflows and version control where appropriate.
Working closely with academic, clinical, and technical colleagues, you will help develop derived variables, support analytical design, and contribute to the safe and accurate use of routinely collected health data. You will also ensure that all data handling and documentation supports safe practice and complies with the University’s health, safety, and data management standards.
This is a part-time (15 hours per week), fixed term for 24 months.
The salary range for this role is $73,400 - $90,700 per annum pro-rated, depending on experience and qualifications.

You will join a collaborative and supportive team within the Department of Medicine. The Health Data Platform brings together a diverse group of research and technical experts focused on enabling impactful health research while upholding the highest standards of privacy, data ethics, and data sovereignty.
The team values open communication, innovation, and shared learning. You’ll be supported by colleagues who are committed to professional excellence, encouraging of development, and passionate about improving health outcomes across Aotearoa. You will receive mentoring in the Platform’s core datasets, secure data processes, and standard cohort/linkage workflows, with opportunities to develop skills in health data curation, documentation, and reproducible analysis.

You are someone who approaches data with thoughtfulness, accuracy, and a strong sense of responsibility. You enjoy helping others succeed in their research and value the role that high-quality data plays in improving health and wellbeing.
You will bring:
- A postgraduate research qualification in a relevant field, or equivalent experience.
- Demonstrated experience (1–2 years) in health data science.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain data science concepts in clear, nontechnical language.
- High attention to detail and a conscientious, selfmotivated approach.
- The ability to work effectively under changing or urgent demands.
- Competence in handling/working with big data using at least one statistical programming language.
It would be beneficial if you also have:
- Experience in statistical consulting within medicine or health.
- Skills in data manipulation and analysis using SAS, R, or Stata.
