Researcher in Analytical Chemistry – Untargeted and Targeted Metabolomics

About the Role

You will support the Swedish academic drug discovery initiatives by providing expertise in sample preparation, metabolomics, including structure elucidation using mass spectrometry. Your role will include developing and implementing analytical workflows for both untargeted and targeted metabolomics of in vitro and in vivo biological samples. You will also contribute to method development and data analysis pipelines.

The position is based in the ADMEoT unit at the Department of Pharmacy (BMC), in collaboration with the Department of Chemistry and the Globisch Laboratory, Uppsala University.

Key Responsibilities

Develop and optimize sample preparation protocols for metabolomics analysis of in vitro (e.g., cell cultures) and in vivo (e.g., plasma, urine, tissue) samples.

Design and conduct untargeted and targeted LC-MS/MS assays to profile metabolic changes.

Set up, operate, and maintain high-resolution mass spectrometers (MS), interpret and analyze experimental data.

Develop and improve MS-based workflows for rapid identification of primary and secondary metabolites, including pathway analysis.

Analyze and interpret data to guide experimental design and support project decisions.

Evaluate and recommend strategies to optimize metabolomics resources for drug discovery projects.

Build and implement informatics pipelines for metabolomics data analysis, comparison, and visualization.

Integrate software tools for data processing, biomarker discovery, and predictive modeling.

Serve as the metabolomics expert in interdisciplinary teams, including within the Department of Chemsitry-BMC, the Globisch Laboratory, and SciLifeLab DDD.-Collaborate with researchers nationally and internationally.

Qualifications

A Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry, Metabolomics, Mass Spectrometry, or a related field, with at least 2 years of relevant postdoctoral or industry experience. Proven hands-on experience in analytical chemistry and operation of liquid chromatography and (high-resolution) mass spectrometry systems, including: Handling and sample preparation of in vitro and in vivo biological samples Developing and implementing liquid chromatography methods Experience with Waters QToF and triple quadrupole instruments, and Waters Connect (Unifi) software Experience with Thermo Orbitrap instruments and Compound Discoverer software Competency in modern data acquisition and quantitative analysis methods Knowledge of regulatory requirements for bioanalytical method validation Experience with Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry is an advantage Demonstrated expertise in both untargeted and targeted metabolomics workflows, including MS-based structure elucidation of secondary metabolites. Strong understanding of statistics and statistical modeling applied to metabolomics. Motivation to work hands-on in a laboratory setting with a collaborative, team-oriented mindset. Ability to develop, validate, and implement new laboratory techniques is advantageous. Excellent communication skills in English, both written and spoken. Strong data management, analysis, and interpretation skills. Demonstrated ability to work in interdisciplinary teams and integrate metabolomics with biological and pharmacological datasets.
