Who are we?

In its themes (fisheries, biodiversity, environment), the Indian Ocean Delegation (DOI) unit carries out work aimed at:

  • Contribute to the acquisition and reliability of the data collected in the Indian Ocean, and more particularly on the French EEZs, in order to support the decisions of managers in terms of the protection of the maritime natural heritage, the exploitation of living resources and the sustainable economic development of the activities that depend on them,
  • Develop R&D actions targeting marine living resources in a context of sustainable local economic development.

Placed under the hierarchical responsibility of the head of the DOI unit, you carry out more particularly work relating to fisheries sciences and also puts your skills at the service of the other themes developed by the DOI.

What will your mission BE?

In its areas of expertise, which are in particular fisheries science and ecosystem approaches, your missions will BE:

  • Contribute to the understanding of the dynamics and connectivity of fishery resources in coastal ecosystems: setting-up, coordination, implementation and promotion of actions and research projects by developing multi-species and multidisciplinary approaches (genetics, chemistry, biology, etc.),
  • Respond to requests (opinions, expertise, etc.) from State services and regional governance bodies, more particularly on species targeted by coastal fisheries (demersal species, small pelagics, etc.) and traditional fisheries.

You will represent the institute with local, regional and international authorities in charge of resource management and fisheries policies (definition and assessment of fish stocks, etc.).

What will your activities BE?

  • To set up and conduct research projects on the sustainable management of coastal fisheries resources in relation to the ecosystem approach to fisheries in a context of global and local change
  • Contribute to fisheries advice and expertise. This includes participation in working groups:
  • Internally: the Overseas Working Group and the various thematic groups of Ifremer,
  • At the national level: DGAMPA meetings (in particular the ORs WGs), CRPMEM commissions as well as the restitution of the results to the actors of the small-scale coastal fishing sector and to managers,
  • At the international level: the regional fisheries commissions of the DOI's area of competence (CPSOOI and APSOI).
  • Manage the monitoring of the "coastal fisheries" sector and contribute to the transmission of fisheries statistics and data to the competent bodies (in particular the Regional Fisheries Management Organizations - RFMOs) and the preparation of working documents for the thematic groups
  • Participate in research training by supervising students (Master's, doctoral students) and supporting post-doctoral and technical staff
  • Scientifically promote the results obtained and contribute to the communication of the work carried out
  • Contribute to the smooth running of the Delegation

How are your activities organised?

  • Full-time
  • Occasional boarding
  • Fixed-term assignment in Overseas France 2 years, renewable 2 times

Le profil recherché

Who are you?

  • PhD in fisheries sciences and desired post-doctoral experience(s)
  • Experience in multi/interdisciplinary research in an international environment is desired

You have the following skills, knowledge and experience:

  • Knowledge of fisheries science and ecology
  • Mastery of methods for the evaluation of exploited fish populations, knowledge of the Management Strategy Evaluation process will BE appreciated
  • Knowledge of the reef and deep coastal environment and the issues associated with marine protected areas
  • Basic knowledge of population genetics
  • Skills in statistical analysis, modelling and GIS
  • Fluency in English, written and spoken
  • Project management
