Position Description Summary/Purpose

The Office of Housing and Residential Life invites applicants for the position of Residence Hall Director. Reporting to the Director of Housing & Residential Life, or designee, the Residence Hall Director will assist in the formulation of residential policies and procedures; support various housing and residential life operations; work in conjunction with other departmental staff and correspond with students and families in response to housing inquiries. This is a 12-month, live-in, full-time position.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily operations of one or more residence halls housing 125-300 students
  • Room assignment
  • Key Control
  • Reporting repair requests
  • Maintenance of building/resident records
  • Participate in departmental and division-wide committees
  • Participate and/or lead weekly meetings, including building, resident staff, leadership team, and one-on-one meetings with supervisor
  • Prepare periodic and annual reports
  • Provide resources and referrals for students and family members with questions that may be both personal and academic in nature

Supervision and Training

  • Supervise student staff including Resident Assistants (RAs), Office Assistants (OAs) and desk staff members
  • Participate in summer and January training of hall staff
  • Conduct student staff meetings on a weekly basis
  • Facilitate regular staff development sessions designed to provide additional training and team building for staff in the unit
  • Provide formal performance evaluations, feedback, and oversee performance management of student staff
  • Serve as a campus and community resource for students and staff by advising, providing guidance, and resources in the planning and execution of residential programming
  • Assist in a centralized student staff selection process
  • Facilitate hall staff engagement with a community and inclusive approach

Community Development

  • Encourage the personal, social and academic development of residential students. This includes but is not limited to: assisting students with academic and social needs, attending unit programs and building meetings, and maintaining visibility

Emergency Response

  • Respond to emergency situations; act as a first-responder to ensure the safety and well-being of students in the residence halls
  • Participate in the on-call rotation as required on a rotating-basis
  • Follow-up with students of concern and provide support to hall staff on supporting impact to community

Student Conduct

  • Meetings with students regarding disciplinary cases
  • Assist in the enforcement of policies; assignment of sanctions
  • Maintenance of the student conduct database
  • Respond to student behavior that is inappropriate, in violation of campus policies and procedures, and/or negatively impacts other residents
  • Appropriate follow-up to ensure sanctions have been completed
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Requirements: Bachelor's degree required in a related field; Master’s degree in Counseling, Higher Education, or College Personnel/Student Affairs preferred; Experience in Student Affairs/Residential Life preferred; Ability to work evening and weekends for programming, operations, and busy periods, such as closing of each semester.

Special Requirements: Valid driver's license & insured vehicle.
