The Residence Hall Director (RHD) of the Rome campus, who serves as the primary live-in administrator on campus, is central to these efforts.

The RHD manages the Residence Hall and provides day-to-day support to students while they are studying in Rome and residing on campus. The person in this position reports to the Director of Rome Programs and supervises 3-4 part-time Resident Assistants.

Essential Functions:

PROGRAM MANAGEMENT & STUDENT LIFE

  • Provide day-to-day support for the Residence Hall Community.
  • Facilitate the arrival and departure of St. John's student groups, including airport pick-up and drop-off.
  • Work with the Student Life Coordinator to conduct an orientation for all incoming residents that familiarizes them with Residence Hall policies and helps them adjust to life abroad.
  • Coordinate bed rental clients, including check-in, check-out, arrivals, departures, orientations, and classroom scheduling.
  • Cooperate with maintenance personnel to manage the operations of the residence and facilities of the Rome Campus to ensure a safe, well-maintained student environment.
  • Oversee preparations of the Residence Hall for student arrival with the Rome Administration facilities staff and cleaning service.
  • Plan and deliver the Cultural Mentorship Program to students in Rome with the Coordinator of Academics and Program Development.
  • Maintain regular office hours to be available for students' questions and assistance.
  • Attend occasional evening and weekend events or trips as assigned by the Director of Rome Programs.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

  • Administer University and residence hall policies and coordinate with Public Safety as needed.
  • Work to ensure the health, safety, and general welfare of all residents on the St. John's Rome campus in keeping with protocols and guidelines established by St. John's University.
  • Serve as primary resource for student health and safety on campus, dealing with crises and emergencies as they arise.
  • Coordinate response to such emergencies, as needed, in a manner consistent with St. John's emergency response protocols.
  • Assist as primary contact for students for any mediation or conflict resolution issues, particularly as they relate to housing and health issues.
  • Establish and maintain communication with students living in the residence hall through individual outreach and community meetings.

ADMINISTRATIVE TASKS

  • Manage administrative reports and forms (e.g., health and safety forms, linen exchange, etc.).
  • Amend Residence Hall Director and Resident Assistant manuals to reflect needs, policies, and procedures specific to the Rome Campus and update as needed.
  • Update the Rome Campus Guide as necessary in conjunction with the Director of Rome Programs.
  • Manage room assignments, distribution, and collection of e-keys.
  • Coordinate with IT to input e-key information into the database.
  • Track and manage residence life violations.
  • Monitor and handle fines and charge fines to students' accounts in Banner.
  • Participate in daily administrative activities with Rome colleagues to support the smooth functioning of Rome programs.
  • Attend student meetings along with other Rome staff.
  • Work with the Rome staff to coordinate assessment initiatives to determine student satisfaction in services and housing and to devise a plan to continually improve operations.
  • Observe and oversee students' attendance at orientation and mandatory activities and enforce related sanctions.
  • Prepare Cessione di Fabbricato for each incoming resident in partnership with the Assistant Vice President.
  • Select and manage Work Study students.

RESIDENT ASSISTANT TRAINING & SUPERVISION

  • Recruit, train, and supervise a staff of 3-4 Resident Assistants on proper safety and reporting protocols and procedures.
  • Monitor work performance and compliance with St. John's procedures and provide ongoing training as needed.
  • Plan and conduct weekly RA meetings.
  • Advise and support the RAs in matters of student services, discipline, and building management.
  • Track the RAs' hours and ensure they are equally distributed among the RAs.
  • Create the RAs' duty schedule.
  • Assist the Coordinator of Student Life with RA assignments for student activities.

Supervisory Responsibility:

This position manages part-time employees on the Rome Residence Life team and is responsible for the hiring and performance management of the employees within that team. The position supervises the following employees: 3-4 Resident Assistants

Work Environment:

This position operates in a professional office environment and is required to use standard office equipment such as personal computers, printers, copiers, multimedia equipment, etc.

Physical Demands:

No unusual physical demands are required other than occasional walking on field trips/site visits with students.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

Full-time position of 38 hours per week, as per the Italian CBA. Office hours are Monday to Friday, with occasional evening/weekend/public holiday work due to programmatic needs or emergencies.

Travel:

Occasional field trips in Italy and travel to the New York and Paris campuses may be required.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in education or a related field
  • 1-2 years' experience in U.S. higher education and/or study abroad

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Master's in education, educational counseling, international education, or a related field
  • 3-5 years' experience in U.S. higher education and/or study abroad
  • Experience with Banner, TerraDotta, Maxient, and Star Rez

Additional Eligibility Qualifications:

  • Authorized to work in the Schengen area
  • Fluent in Italian and English
  • Ability to work flexibly, based on program needs
