Position Summary:
Professional, full-time, live-in position in Residence Life. Responsible for student, community, and social justice advocacy within the residence halls; comprehensive oversight of 8 - 21 student leaders, including one Student Assistant, and oversight for learning communities in the Housing & Residence Life areas. This position is responsible for coordinating housing initiatives that foster curricular and co-curricular engagement among students living on campus. Involvement with professional associations, university committees, events, and functions is strongly encouraged and supported. Educators interested in working with a socially just, team-oriented, academically centered, and environmentally responsible organization are strongly encouraged to apply.
Key Responsibilities:
Student Staff Supervision and Community Development - 40%
- Hire and train Resident Advisors (RA), and Lead Resident Advisor
- Plan and organize on-going staff training.
- Conduct bi-annual student staff evaluations.
- Create and oversee duty schedule.
- Monitor job performance through weekly meetings.
- Implement Housing community development model in your area.
- Program tracking and assessment
- Maintain budgets for staff and area councils.
- Maintain a strong and visible community presence in respective areas.
- Support the mission and goals of Residence Life
- Collaborate with campus partners to provide educational and community development programming in the halls
Community Action Conference (Student Behavior Management for a specific area) - 20%
- Review and explain Housing and University policy.
- Review Incident Reports
- Hold Community Action Conference promptly to determine responsibility in an incident and issue a finding.
- Complete documentation regarding Community Action Conference findings (letters, database, etc.)
- Mediate high-level roommate conflicts
Professional Staff Team Member - 10%
- Attend weekly Residence Life Team meetings, monthly Department meetings, and other meetings as needed.
- Develop, implement, and participate in professional development training.
- Serve on department committees as needed.
- Represent the Housing & Residence Life by serving on university wide committees.
- Serve as a positive role model and mentor for new team members
Duty and Crisis Response - 5%
- Respond to emergencies and other crises which may require driving to remote locations.
- Serve as initial point of contact for emergency personnel.
- On call duty rotation
- Provide regular updates regarding incidents that occur while serving on duty
Resident Advocate - 5%
- Facilitate problem solving meetings amongst residents.
- Act as a resource and provide referrals as needed.
- Provide academic advising and assistance
Advise Student Groups - 5%
- Advise area council(s)
- Attend council meetings.
- Provide guidance and mentorship to volunteer student staff.
- Meet regularly with the president and/or executive board of the council
Oversee Facilities - 5%
- Work with custodial, grounds, and maintenance staff to ensure a safe and clean living area.
- Meet with custodial, grounds, and maintenance staff in the area as needed.
- Follow-up on building damage issues as appropriate
Administrative - 5%
- Complete weekly and annual reports
- Assist with the professional staff hiring process.
- Complete and submit all necessary budgetary paperwork.
- Other tasks as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Associated with this Position Include:
Working knowledge of: Practices, procedures, and activities related to student services programs.
General knowledge of: Methods and problems of organizational and program management; Research and interview techniques; Principles of individual and group behavior
Skills: Solid administrative and organizational skills; Effective interpersonal and intercultural communication skills; Computer proficiency
Ability to: Interpret and apply program rules and regulations; Use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements; Obtain factual and interpretative information through interviews; Reason logically; Collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations based on these data; Advise students individually and in groups on routine matters where required; Recognize multicultural, multi-sexed and multi-aged value systems and work accordingly; Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies and others in committee work, and student advising and community contacts; Rapidly acquire a general knowledge of Cal Poly Humboldt's overall operation, functions, and programs; Make decisions and carry through actions having implications with regard to other program or service areas.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration, or a job-related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities listed above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
- Experience: Possession of the knowledge and abilities typically is demonstrated through the following Experience requirements. Two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A master's degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience.
- Valid CA class C driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's Degree in Student Affairs Administration, College Student Personnel, Higher Education, Counseling, Sociology, Social Work or other related field
- Experience working with on-campus housing and advising special interest groups (non-traditional, cultural, LGBTQQIA, etc.)
- Ability to speak Spanish
