Position Summary
The Operations & Facilities Management Department at WashU Medicine is committed to delivering a comprehensive range of services to support the medical campus. We oversee maintenance and operations for 65 buildings, covering more than 11.1 million gross square feet of space. This includes the 11-story, 609,000-square-foot neuroscience research building, which houses one of the world’s highest concentrations of neuroscientists. Our responsibilities include operational and administrative support, strategic planning, and project management. Furthermore, as WashU Medicine continues to expand its presence both on and off campus in areas such as teaching, clinical care, and research, our team remains instrumental in ensuring the seamless delivery of clinical care, advancing research initiatives, and facilitating educational endeavors.
Serves as the primary first responder (armed) to all life safety and protection of property, emergency, and non-emergency incidents on campus. Includes rendering emergency medical assistance or general first aid. Acts on own initiative, as well as directs calls for service. Proactively identifies security issues and works towards a quick resolution. Enforces University policy/procedures and criminal law. May be assigned to vehicle, bike, or foot patrol. Must be prepared to deal with various complex and ever-changing situations (crisis intervention, apprehension of criminal suspects, serious injuries, etc.), make quick decisions, and take action. Needs to be able to utilize various tools and techniques (negotiating, de-escalating, non-violent crisis intervention, etc.) to resolve the situations and accurately and thoroughly record information for the official University record.
Job Description
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
- Responds to calls or reacts on view to emergency and non-emergency incidents (medical, law enforcement, injury/accident, etc.) on campus. Takes action, or makes a note for follow-up, of any safety and security issues. Provides Emergency Management support during larger-scale incidents. When not on assignment, patrols the University properties.
- Controls criminal or other significant scenes, including preservation and gathering of evidence. Receives/compiles information for incident reports and conducts initial and follow-up investigations, as assigned. Takes photos, makes videos, or creates any other relevant documentary evidence in support of criminal prosecution, potential insurance claims, and other legal processes.
- Provides necessary follow-up (transports to the medical facility, notifies proper authorities, and undertakes any other necessary coordination) for faculty, staff, students, and visitors after immediate resolution of an incident. Apprehends criminal suspects for on-view or reported criminal activity. Prepares for and testifies in criminal proceedings.
- May serve as a Field Training Officer or instructor. May fulfill informal leadership duties in the absence of Leads or supervisors.
- Conducts building checks, which include checking access control devices, door locks, and proactively looking for any possible safety or security hazard. Uses problem-solving skills to resolve issues found during building checks.
- Assists Medical Center personnel and visitors with directions and provides escorts when requested. Partners with customers in assigned geographical areas and assists them in resolving multi-department issues. Provides information and assistance as needed to individuals with special needs.
- Takes possession of found property, attempting to locate the owner, and securing property according to established procedure.
- Enforces parking regulations and provides support to the Transportation Office as needed.

Required Qualifications
Education: High school diploma or equivalent high school certification or combination of education and/or experience.
Certifications: St. Louis Metropolitan Security License - St. Louis City/St. Louis County, St. Louis Metropolitan Security License - within 30 days of hire - St. Louis City/St. Louis County.
Work Experience: Security Officer In A Professional Security Organization (2 Years), Armed Officer In An Academic Environment Or Civilian/Military Police Setting (1 Year).
Driver's License: A Class E (MO) or Class D (IL) license and a good driving record are required for this position.
Preferred Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's degree - Criminal Justice.
Certifications: Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) - CIT International, Emergency Medical Technician - Basic (EMT-B) - Missouri Division of Professional Registration.
