Position overview
The Security Manager, Governance & Risk is a key leadership position within the Operations Portfolio, responsible for driving the University’s security governance, risk management and assurance activities in alignment with the Australian National University’s strategic objectives. Reporting to the Associate Director, Security, this role oversees the development, maintenance and continuous improvement of the University’s physical security risk management framework, policies, standards and compliance reporting.
The role also carries responsibility for university wide security governance reporting, including presentation of monthly governance and risk updates to the Security Governance Committee (SGC). This position plays a critical role in uplifting security culture, enhancing operational readiness, and safeguarding staff, students, assets, and campus environments across multiple ANU locations.
The Person
You will be an experienced security professional with demonstrated governance or risk capabilities. Key requirements of the applicant will be:
- Extensive experience in contract management of security service providers. Demonstrated capability in identifying, analysing and evaluating security risks and delivering high‑quality strategic advice.
- Proven experience reviewing and actioning threat assessments, leading investigations and delivering evidence‑based recommendations.
- Strong skills in developing, implementing and improving security policies, standards and procedures
- Highly developed stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to form strong partnerships across ANU, AFP, ACT Emergency Services and external partners.
- Experience delivering governance and risk reporting, supporting operational teams, and designing/delivering security training programs.
- Relevant tertiary qualifications and/or industry training credentials (highly regarded).

Located within the Operations Portfolio, this role contributes directly to ANU’s capability to identify, manage and mitigate security risks, supporting high standards of security governance, compliance, and risk oversight across the campus community.
