Job Summary
The purpose of this position is to develop, implement, interpret
and manage policies, procedures and programs designed to mitigate
risk and potential liability associated with university activities
and initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
Risk identification, assessment and minimization - Serves as the primary contact for the campus community and general public for campus-related risk management issues. Analyzes issues and makes decisions/recommendations to address identified risks. Interprets various laws, regulations and policies to develop risk management policies, programs, and procedures. for the University. Performs risk assessments of various campus and auxiliary organization activities to ensure that liability issues are…
addressed; that the campus complies with executive orders and other governing regulatory requirements and makes recommendations regarding the activity to minimize risk to the University.
Tort liability and insurance program management - Responsible
for the management of the campus tort liability and commercial
insurance programs. This will include all fiscal responsibility
related to Risk Management. Commercial insurance programs include
but are not limited to; property insurance, inland marine, student
professional liability insurance, foreign travel liability
insurance, vehicle insurance, special event insurance and student
travel accident insurance. Each of these commercial insurance
programs requires a different set of procedures and processes to
obtain coverage and manage claims. Manages all claims, except
workers' compensation, by providing information to claimants on
processes, coverage limits and exclusions.
Legal Holds - Responsible for drafting legal hold notice
advising campus individuals that they may be called to provide
information and preserve all documents that may be called upon for
any lawsuits against the CSU. Coordinates electronic legal hold
requests with Information Technology. Represents the University
during small claims and restitution legal proceedings. The Risk
Manager coordinates this effort with the University Counsel or
other members of the Chancellor's Office General Counsel team.

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and
qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal
equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.
- Hiring Range: The hiring range for this
position is $8,742 - $11,667 per month commensurate with
candidate's education, experience, skills, and training.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The ideal candidate is an effective communicator who can clearly
convey complex risk management, insurance, and regulatory
information to diverse audiences. They are skilled at analyzing
facts, assessing risk, and partnering with campus leaders, legal
counsel, and other stakeholders to develop sound strategies that
protect and advance the University's interests.
Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse
campus community. Ability to follow all university policies,
procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety,
civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and
procedures. Ability to contribute to a positive university
experience for each and every student and assist in achieving the

Education and Experience
Bachelor's Degree required.
• Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible risk management
experience including claims management experience required.
Preferred:
• Associate in Risk Management (ARM) - National Professional
Designation or Designation as a Certified Risk Manager (CRM).
• Risk Management experience in the public sector.
Licenses / Certificates
• Valid CA driver's license.
Employees who are required to operate motorized vehicles and/or use
their personal vehicle more than once a month on university
business are required to take a mandatory Defensive Driving course
and enroll in the DMV Employee Pull Notice (EPN) Program.

completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSULB will
make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if

The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated
reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting
Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in
CSU Executive Order 1083 Revised July 21, 2017 as a condition of
employment.
The duties of this position will include participation in decisions
that may have a material financial benefit to the incumbent.
Therefore, the selected candidate will be required to file Conflict
of Interest Form 700: Statement of Economic Interest on an annual
basis, complete ethics training within 6 months of appointment, and
attend this training every other year thereafter.
