Position Summary

Our clinical and translational research activities encompass outcomes research, clinical trials, and discovery/validation studies that advance obstetric research and improve patient care practices. The Research Nurse will coordinate one or more research studies and will work as part of the Labor & Delivery (L&D) research team to screen and enroll pregnant patients into various studies. In addition, the nurse will review and extract data from electronic fetal monitoring and electronic medical records, and will provide clinical expertise and skills to the L&D research team such as interpreting data, taking vital signs, drawing blood, and other similar duties as assigned. The ideal candidate would have strong interpersonal, organizational, and analytical skills. Must have nursing experience in Labor & Delivery or Antepartum and be proficient in interpreting external fetal monitoring.

This position works on a three-week rotating schedule:

  • Week 1 is L&D Floor Coverage (cover the research desk M-F, 7am-9am and work on campus the rest of the day)
  • Week 2 is On-Call (work remote and responding to overnight pages from 9pm – 7am Monday - Saturday)
  • Week 3 is Office Work (work on campus or remote depending on team needs).

The position requires overnight and weekend on-call shifts.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Works under the Principal Investigator’s (PI) guidance to meet the research objectives of the project.
  • Reviews and extracts research data from electronic fetal monitoring and electronic medical records.
  • Assists with study start-up activities including myIRB applications for initial review, modifications/amendments, continuing reviews and reportable events.
  • Works with research team to identify, screen and enroll study subjects.
  • Ensures protocol requirements are met including, but not limited to: direct contact with research participants; collection of basic health information; coordination of study related procedures; handling, processing and shipping of research specimens; organization of source documentation and data entry.
  • Prepares/submits reportable event reports to sponsor(s), IRB and regulatory agencies in accordance with the study protocol and established policies, procedures and regulations.
  • Collaborates with sponsor’s research associates during monitoring activities by providing study documentation, data clarifications and reports as necessary.
  • Provides oversight of administration of medications, study drugs, or study interventions, as appropriate. Administers investigational products in approved setting.
  • Educates staff nurses caring for research patients by providing necessary information about the research study including intervention, potential adverse events and required study procedures.
  • Performs other duties incidental to the work described above.

Required Qualifications

Education: A diploma, certification or degree is not required.

Certifications: Basic Life Support - American Heart Association, Basic Life Support - American Red Cross, Registered Nurse - Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, Registered Nurse - Missouri Division of Professional Registration

Work Experience: No specific work experience is required for this position.

Skills: Not Applicable

Driver's License: A driver's license is not required for this position.

More About This Job

Required Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
  • Current RN licensure in the state of Missouri and/or Illinois, depending on location.
  • Basic Life Support certification (Online BLS certifications, those without a skills assessment component, are not sufficient to meet the BLS requirements).
  • Labor & Delivery or Antepartum experience and be proficient in interpreting external fetal monitoring.

Preferred Qualifications

Education: B.S. - Bachelor of Science - Nursing, B.S.N. - Bachelor of Science in Nursing

Certifications: No additional certification beyond what is stated in the Required Qualifications section.
