Roofer/Tinner Apprentice
Overview
The Apprentice performs tasks in support of a wide variety of roofer/tinner maintenance activities. The incumbent performs assigned duties under direction by supervision and journey level shop personnel. Maintains good standing as an apprentice by successfully completing all education and on-the-job requirements as outlined in the department’s Apprenticeship Agreement. The incumbent follows University rules and regulations at all times.
Responsibilities
- As directed, the Apprentice effectively and safely performs a wide range of roofing/tinning tasks, including the repair, renovation, and maintenance of campus buildings and structures, in accordance with the apprenticeship on-the-job training requirements, while working with a journey level mechanic.
- Observes University safety regulations, uses appropriate personal protective equipment, and performs all assigned work tasks in a safe manner. Ensures proper care in the safe use and maintenance of vehicles, tools, and equipment.
- Supplements practical trade experience by attending vocational / technical trade school and hybrid on-line instruction during non-business hours, following the defined program of apprenticeship related educational and instructional courses. (e.g., roofing, sheet metal, blueprint reading, shop math etc.).
- Communicates clearly and effectively with co-workers and management, both verbally and in writing. Maintains and accurate log of daily tasks and effectively utilizes the departmental computerized maintenance management software (CMMS).
- Performs additional assignments which may include overtime, after hours, and special events. Available for emergency call-backs as necessary.
- Follows and abides by the department’s customer service standards.
- When snowstorms occur, the apprentice is an “Essential Employee” who is mandated to assist in the removal of snow and the de-icing of campus walks and steps.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Must be able to perform all essential duties in a satisfactory manner.
- Must be a high school graduate or possess an equivalency (GED).
- Possess the ability and technical aptitude to learn the roofing/tinning trade.
- Must possess a clear understanding of the potential occupational hazards connected with roofing/tinning work and the associated safety standards and practices which must be applied.
- Ability to work with supervision and guidance, across the range of trade skills normally encountered by the roofing/tinning trade in a variety of facilities.
- Must be able to successfully complete all educational and on-the-job requirements of the apprenticeship program.
- Ability to safely and effectively work with general types of roofing/tinning trade hand and power tools such as hammers, spudders, hot air welders, metal shears, metal forming and bending equipment, soldering equipment, etc.
- Possess a positive attitude and strong interpersonal skills; work independently and in teams. Possess a willingness to learn all aspects of the trade.
- Must be a self-starter with initiative to understand and learn.
- Must be able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Must possess a valid, permanent driver’s license and be able to pass a background check.
- Must have the ability to learn computer basics and be able to work with the department’s software programs.
