Is the Job related to staff position within a Research Infrastructure?: NoOffer Description
Scientific Advisor: Emmanuel Zambrini Cruzeiro (ist169238)
Organic Unit: Institute of Telecommunications
Scholarship Theme: Room temperature optical quantum memory for long distance quantum communication
Duration: 6 months
Maximum Duration Including Renewals: 6 months
Objectives
IberianQCI is a European project dedicated to the creation of an Iberian quantum network. The Iberian quantum network will include fiber-optic links between Portugal and Spain, as well as free-space links using satellites and optical ground stations. An extremely promising device for long distance space-based quantum communication is a room-temperature optical quantum memory. In this project, the student will develop a room-temperature optical quantum memory based on an Alkali gas cell, and demonstrate efficient quantum storage. The challenge is experimental, involving quantum optics, atomic physics, and optoelectronics. The main objective will be the demonstration of quantum storage at room temperature for free-space quantum communication.
Work Plan
- Spectroscopy and optimization of memory time and efficiency
- Demonstration of quantum storage of light
- Demonstration of storage integrated with a free-space quantum communication protocol
