Summary of the Position:
We are seeking well-qualified candidates for a short-term research assistant position in the Bond Lab (Research Professional 1, Microbiology. Job Code 8351MC) to conduct research in growing anaerobic microorganisms in bioreactors. The successful candidate must have prior experience in cultivating anaerobes in electrode bioreactors, handling bacteria in anoxic chambers and preparation of anaerobic media. Other tasks include general media prep, laboratory maintenance as well as aiding ongoing projects.
The salary range for this position is $23.69/hr-$29.33/hour. This is a 75% time, temporary, 6-month Civil Service position.
Duties and Responsibilities
75% — Anaerobic microbial culture and bioreactor growth. Perform anaerobic bacterial culture of environmental microorganisms in bioreactors. Contribute to troubleshooting and protocol refinement as directed by the PI or senior lab members.
10% — Molecular biology and cloning. Perform DNA and RNA extraction from microbial cultures and clone vectors for genetic and biochemical analyses. Assist with PCR, gel electrophoresis, and preparation of samples for downstream sequencing and analysis.
10% — Lab maintenance and general support. Maintain lab stocks of media, buffers, and consumables. Monitor and maintain general lab equipment. Assist with reagent preparation and general lab upkeep.
5% — Other duties as assigned. Provide flexible support across lab projects. Contribute to protocol documentation; may assist with training of new lab members.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- BS in microbiology or related area with experience in bacterial genetics, molecular biology, anaerobic microbiology, and bioelectrochemistry or a combination of education and relevant work experience to equal at least four years.
