Rsch Pro 2-Informatics
We are seeking a programmer to work full-time in the Zaidi Lab at the University of Minnesota. Broadly, we are interested in understanding the evolution and genetic basis of human disease. For this purpose, we analyze genomic and phenotypic data that requires writing computer programs that can read and wrangle various data types (e.g. summary statistics from genome-wide association studies and next generation sequencing output), carry out statistical computation, and output relevant information. We need a motivated individual with a background in computer science, bioinformatics, or related field to develop and employ computational tools to carry out such tasks under supervision in an efficient manner. The successful candidate will have knowledge in programming, preferably in Python, experience working in a Unix environment. They will be motivated, organized, and will work under supervision to help the investigator, postdoctoral fellows, and students in the lab with tasks such as managing data and code and executing computational pipelines to analyze genomic data.
Essential Functions:
- 50% - Under the direction of the PI, this candidate will aid in the creation of computationally efficient tools (in Python, R, and bash) to organize, manage, and analyze genomic and genome-wide association study datasets using massively parallel computing infrastructure in the Minnesota Supercomputing Institute (MSI) and Google Cloud.
- 30% - Work closely with PI, students, and postdoctoral fellows on similar computational tasks. Providing support to aid in the development of production-ready code and pipelines for publication.
- 15% - Using data generated by PI and Postdoctoral Fellows, this candidate will organize that data, help with coding, and scripts on MSI, Google Cloud and Zaidi lab GitHub repository.
- 5% Maintaining documentation of data collected by PI and postdoctoral fellows.
Required Qualifications:
BA/BS degree plus at least 2 years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant experience to equal at least 6 years.
Preferred Qualifications:
BA/BS degree in Computer Science or related field with proficiency and experience in Python, R, and bash, experience with git/github. Knowledge of genomics and genome-wide association studies is preferred but not required.
