S. Robert Freedman Associate or Asst Professor of Screenwriting (tenured or tenure-track) at Brown U

The Department of Literary Arts at Brown University invites applications for the S. Robert Freedman Associate or Assistant Professor of Screenwriting (tenured or tenure-track), beginning 1 July 2026.

Candidates should have a graduate degree or equivalent, a strong publication or production record, including produced screenplays (for film or television), and demonstrated excellence and engagement in teaching writing at the university level. The department is particularly interested in works that innovate on the level of form, content, and subject; and/or reflect the narratives of communities not often represented in film and television. Duties of the position include teaching screenwriting as well as elective seminars/workshops, helping build the curriculum and departmental offerings in screenwriting, directing undergraduate screenwriting theses, advising undergraduate students, and contributing to the creative and intellectual life of the department through individual and collaborative initiatives.

Candidates with additional expertise in other areas of creative writing or writers who have adapted their work to the screen are also encouraged to apply.

Candidates should submit via Interfolio -- a letter of application (detailing their work as writers, teaching experience, and approach to teaching), a current CV, a statement of teaching philosophy, a writing sample (including a substantial portion of a creative text), and at least three references. Candidates should address how they would contribute to the research and/or teaching missions of our diverse and inclusive university community. Review of applications will begin on 15 October 2025 and the position will remain open until filled.
