Preferred: Working toward a B.S. in Biology, Natural Resource Management, Conservation or related. Experience in working in ArcGIS or the ability to quickly learn the program. Independent worker. Interest in wildlife biology, ecology, or a related field.

Primary Responsibilities: Purpose of Job: Works with the Borderlands Research Institute Scientists to analyze GPS data and existing remote sensing-based land cover data sets to understand seasonal habitat use of sandhill cranes at Ladd Marsh Wildlife Area, Oregon. The intern will focus on answering what landscape habitat features are selected and used by sandhill cranes to inform management decisions. This position will work with a broader team within a long-term project aiming to answer a variety of different ecological questions for managing populations of sandhill cranes.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • QAQC sandhill crane point location data
  • Develop datasets of relevant land cover data
  • Analysis and reporting of findings.
  • Develop metadata associated with the data set
  • Develop a poster or presentation of the results.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Responsible for personal safety and the safety of others; must exercise due caution and practice safe work habits at all times.

Supervision: Direct supervision from Dr. Antonio Cantu for day-to-day instruction. Dr. Cantu will also act as the Faculty Mentor within the STEM Internship Program.

STEM Internship Program: This position is part of the Title III STEM Lobo Track to Success (LTS) SRSU STEM Internship Program. Along with the normal job duties, the student will learn from the faculty supervisor about the STEM workforce, different career pathways, research, and more. Students will gain knowledge, experience, and professional connections in the STEM field. Students will have access to professional development tools throughout the internship program (resume building, interview practices, etc.).
