Position Summary
The
Department
of Theatre and Dance in the
College of Arts and
Sciences at
UB is seeking a
Scene Shop Supervisor.
The Scene Shop Supervisor oversees all THD Scene Shop
operations—including the cut shop, welding shop, fabrication floor,
and paint floor—ensuring safe, efficient support for coursework,
productions, and CFA events. They manage shop access, including
university use, rentals, and scheduling, in alignment with academic
and production calendars.
Key responsibilities include:
- Enforcing safety protocols, providing ongoing training,
ensuring regulatory compliance, and supervising all shop
activity.
Maintains facilities and equipment; oversees repairs,
inventory, purchasing, waste management, and budget
operations;
Supports green theatre initiatives.
Provides hands-on production support, instructional assistance,
and student mentorship.
Contributes to load-ins and strikes, coordinates ancillary
fabrication projects, and collaborates with the Technical Director,
Design and Technology faculty and staff, and CFA partners.
Provides technical support for THD facilities, maintaining shop
policies and safety documentation, and contributing to program
development, outreach, and interdisciplinary collaborations.

Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in technical theater or a related field OR
equivalent experience in performing arts or entertainment scenic
fabrication.
- Minimum two years of professional stage carpentry, scene shop
oversight, technical direction or equivalent experience in
presenting touring theatrical, corporate, or concert events.
- Proven ability to perform technical tasks (rigging, carpentry,
welding, and electrical) with a focus on safety. Strong knowledge
of technical theater, live event, and current safety practices in
the entertainment industry.
- Excellent communication, supervisory, and organizational
skills, with the ability to manage diverse teams while maintaining
safe work environments. Commitment to fostering a collaborative,
inclusive environment and delivering excellent customer
service.
- Flexibility with the work schedule, including availability for
nights, weekends, and long production shifts.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in technical theater or a related field.
- Advanced safety certifications (e.g., OSHA-30, ETCP-certified
Rigger (Theater))
- Experience leading professional and student crews in a
multi-venue or academic environment.
- Familiarity with CAD software (e.g., Vectorworks) for
production design.
- Demonstrated educational expertise, working with diverse
populations and pedagogical approaches.
- Experience working in higher education.
Physical Demands
- Must be able to move and transport items weighing up to 50
pounds.
- Frequently moves about and positions self, including bending,
stooping, kneeling, and squatting.
Salary Range
$57,500 - $61,500
