About the Project
The ultimate-goal of wireless communications is to provide fibre-like, user-centric and low-cost connections to support ultra-high throughput, reliable, and energy efficient communications. The aim of this project is to investigate the energy efficiency for a new type of flexible-antenna systems, termed pinching-antenna systems (PASS). The core concept of PASS is to activate pinching antennas by applying small dielectric particles, e.g., plastic pinches, onto a dielectric waveguide. A prototype demonstrated that strong LoS communication links can be established by this simple, low-cost pinching mechanism. With a stepper motor, a pinching antenna can be dynamically deployed near the receiver to establish the strong LoS link, achieving ultra-high spectral and energy efficiency. This architecture creates a new paradigm for future mobile networks, especially for green communications as PASS can create strong LoS link.
This project involves the development of a complete power consumption model, establish a theoretical optimisation framework, devise efficient optimisation algorithms, and investigate the application of PASS with other technologies. It is primarily theoretical and computer simulation based. Given the complexity and dynamic nature of these challenges, machine learning (ML)-based solutions will be explored to enable adaptive and scalable optimisation, in addition to conventional mathematical optimisation methods.
This project is expected to start in September 2027.

Eligibility: The standard academic entry requirement for this PhD is an upper second-class (2:1) honours degree in Electrical, Electronic, or Communications Engineering (or international equivalent) OR any upper-second class (2:1) honours degree and a Master’s degree at merit in Electrical, Electronic, or Communications Engineering (or international equivalent), with Master's degree preferable. Previous research experience in wireless communication, optimisation techniques, pinching antenna is desirable.
