technologies mature, multiple companies are developing and deploying VLEO spacecraft over the next few years.
An area that has been overlooked in these developments is the ability to use the drag compensation and out of plane aerodynamics as control variables to actively change a satellites orbit. Such control can be used, for example, to change the satellite’s ground track. This could be used to change between regional focus and global remote sensing modes, effectively retasking a satellite to maximise coverage and reduce revisit time over important targets depending on operational priorities. This project will explore this and other aerodynamically enabled functionality, with a focus on developing techniques and methods.
By working on this project you will join an world-leading team of researchers working on VLEO satellite design and applications, from concept through to in-orbit demonstration.
This project is expected to start in September 2027.

Eligibility: The standard academic entry requirement for this PhD is an upper second-class (2:1) honours degree (or international equivalent) in Aerospace or Space Engineering OR any upper-second class (2:1) honours degree and a Master’s degree at merit (or international equivalent) in Aerospace or Space Engineering.

Funding Notes
Funding for this project covers tuition fees, UKRI minimum annual stipend (currently £21,805/annum) and up to a £2.5k/annum research training support grant for the full duration of the 3.5-year programme.
