About the Project
As conventional electronics approaches fundamental scaling limits, alternative approaches based on electron spin and heat transport offer new opportunities for energy-efficient information processing. Two-dimensional (2D) materials and van der Waals heterostructures provide an ideal platform for investigating these phenomena, owing to their unique electronic, magnetic, and thermal properties, which can be tailored through material choice and interface engineering.
This PhD project will explore spin and heat transport in graphene and related 2D materials, with the aim of understanding how spin, charge, and thermal currents interact at the nanoscale. The student will characterise nanoscale devices using advanced transport measurement techniques, developing expertise in spintronics, thermoelectrics, and low-dimensional quantum materials. The project will contribute to the development of next-generation nanoelectronic technologies beyond conventional charge-based electronics.
We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated graduate with: a strong background in solid-state physics, electronics, or related areas; an interest in experimental research and nanoscale device physics; good communication skills, both written and verbal.
This project is expected to start in September 2027.

Eligibility: The standard academic entry requirement for this PhD is an upper second-class (2:1) honours degree (or international equivalent) in Physics, Electronic Engineering and Nanotechnology OR any upper-second class (2:1) honours degree and a Master’s degree at merit (or international equivalent) in Physics, Electronic Engineering and Nanotechnology. Previous research experience in graphene and other two-dimensional materials; magnetism or electronic transport measurements; microfabrication techniques and data analysis is desirable.

Funding Notes
Funding covers tuition fees, an annual stipend at the UKRI minimum rate (currently £21,805 per year), and a research training support grant of up to £2,500 per year for the full 3.5-year programme.
