About the Project
Two-dimensional quantum materials are creating new opportunities to design electronic states that have no direct counterpart in conventional solids. When atomically thin crystals are stacked with a relative twist or lattice mismatch, long-wavelength moiré patterns can emerge, profoundly reshaping their electronic structure and giving rise to new forms of topology, magnetism and electronic correlation.
This PhD project will investigate how these effects can be engineered in moiré and lattice-mismatched two-dimensional quantum materials. The aim is to understand how parameters such as lattice mismatch, twist angle, stacking configuration, strain, spin-orbit coupling and interlayer hybridisation can be used to create and control novel quantum phases.
The project will be primarily theoretical and computational. You will use state-of-the-art first-principles electronic-structure methods, together with Wannier and tight-binding models, symmetry analysis and large-scale numerical simulations, to study realistic quantum materials and heterostructures. Depending on the direction of the project, you may also explore disorder, quasiparticle interference, transport, many-body effects or machine-learning approaches.
A central goal will be to connect microscopic theory with experimentally measurable signatures, allowing theoretical predictions to guide experiments and helping to interpret emerging results from collaborating experimental groups.
You will receive training in density-functional theory, electronic-structure modelling, high-performance computing, scientific programming and advanced numerical techniques. The project will suit a student with a strong background in quantum mechanics and condensed-matter physics who is interested in computational physics, quantum materials and the discovery of new electronic phases.
The project offers considerable flexibility for the student to develop their own direction within the broader themes of topology, magnetism, correlations and low-dimensional quantum matter.
This project is expected to start in September 2027.

Eligibility: The standard academic entry requirement for this PhD is an upper second-class (2:1) honours degree in Physics (or international equivalent) OR any upper-second class (2:1) honours degree and a Master’s degree at merit in Physics (or international equivalent). Previous research experience in condensed matter physics and/or computational modelling is desirable. Familiarity with programming (e.g. Python, C/Fortran) and a strong interest in quantum materials, magnetism, and topology will be considered advantageous.
