About the Project
The Higgs boson might hold the answer to the deepest questions in fundamental physics. Current measurements at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) create unprecedented sensitivity to deviations from the Standard Model. Such deviations provide crucial clues not only about new particle physics, but also about the evolution of the early Universe.
This PhD project will explore the connection between Higgs physics, effective field theory (EFT), CP violation, electroweak phase transitions and inflation. The central idea is to use EFT as a common language linking collider measurements to cosmological dynamics.
A major objective will be to develop state-of-the-art precision predictions for Higgs-sector observables for new physics, with particular emphasis on theoretical robustness and experimental sensitivity. The student will investigate how modern analysis techniques, including AI-assisted optimisation, can be used to identify observables with enhanced sensitivity to new physics.
Particular attention will be given to CP-violating Higgs interactions and to non-linear realisations of electroweak symmetry breaking. These effects are especially interesting because they can leave correlated signatures across collider experiments and cosmology. The project will study how collider constraints can be translated into statements about the thermal history of the Universe, including scenarios in which the electroweak phase transition becomes first order and may generate observable gravitational-wave signals.
A further strand of the project will investigate how these TeV-scale baryogenesis scenarios can be distinguished from models in which the matter–antimatter asymmetry is generated during inflation or reheating. This will involve studying Higgs and gravitational dynamics during the inflationary epoch and the subsequent evolution of plasma and magnetic-field correlations.
The project will combine analytical and computational approaches. Techniques include quantum field theory, EFT matching, collider simulation, statistical interpretation of experimental data, finite-temperature field theory, effective-potential calculations, numerical evolution of cosmological systems and magnetohydrodynamic modelling. Depending on the direction of the project, the student may also work with symbolic algebra tools, Monte-Carlo event generators and dedicated numerical packages for phase-transition and cosmological dynamics.
The successful candidate will receive close, regular one-to-one supervision and will be encouraged to collaborate on publications from an early stage. They will participate actively in the local particle theory group and interact with a broad international network of collaborators working on Higgs physics, EFT and cosmology. Training will be provided in advanced quantum field theory, collider phenomenology, computational methods, research software and scientific communication. The student will also benefit from formal training and professional development activities organised through the FSE Doctoral Academy.
We envision several publishable research outputs. This project would suit a student with a strong interest and background in theoretical particle physics, collider phenomenology and cosmology. A solid background in quantum mechanics and particle physics is desirable, while prior experience with quantum field theory or scientific programming would be advantageous but is not essential.
This project is expected to start in September 2027.
