About the Project
Quantum systems are never perfectly isolated from their surroundings. Interactions with environmental degrees of freedom can profoundly alter quantum behaviour, producing dissipation and decoherence but also giving rise to new physical phenomena that cannot be understood by considering the system alone. Developing accurate theoretical descriptions of such open quantum systems is therefore essential both for understanding fundamental quantum physics and for exploiting quantum effects in emerging…
technologies.
This PhD project will develop and apply theoretical methods for studying the equilibrium and non-equilibrium behaviour of open quantum systems, with particular emphasis on situations where conventional weak-coupling or memoryless descriptions break down. The objectives will be to develop improved theoretical understanding and modelling techniques for such regimes, and to use them to identify and characterise new physical behaviour. Depending on the interests of the student and developments within the wider research programme, the project may explore questions involving strong system-environment interactions, non-Markovian dynamics, quantum thermodynamics, many-body quantum systems, or strong light-matter coupling.
A central aim will be to understand how interactions between quantum systems, electromagnetic fields and their wider environments modify observable physical behaviour. Possible applications include solid-state quantum technologies, nanoscale quantum thermal processes, quantum transport, and molecular or condensed-matter systems interacting strongly with light. Some directions may connect directly with ongoing experimental collaborations.
The project will combine fundamental theoretical physics with the development of analytical and computational techniques for complex quantum systems. Methods will include analytical modelling, numerical simulation and computational approaches to quantum dynamics and many-body systems, as appropriate to the specific project. It would suit a student interested in quantum mechanics, quantum optics, condensed-matter theory or quantum information, and offers scope to work on both foundational questions and problems motivated by emerging quantum technologies.
Potential outcomes include new theoretical methods, improved understanding of open-system and light-matter phenomena, predictions relevant to experimentally accessible systems, and peer-reviewed publications. The precise research direction will be developed jointly with the successful candidate, according to their interests and background. The student will receive individual supervision and research training in open quantum systems theory, quantum optics and relevant analytical and computational techniques. Training will be tailored to the specific project and the student's background, and will include opportunities to develop skills in scientific computing, research communication and engagement with collaborators where appropriate.
This project is expected to start in September 2027.

Eligibility: The standard academic entry requirement for this PhD is an upper second-class (2:1) honours degree (or international equivalent) in Physics or Theoretical Physics OR any upper-second class (2:1) honours degree and a Master's degree at merit (or international equivalent) in Physics or Theoretical Physics.

Funding Notes
Funding covers tuition fees, an annual stipend at the UKRI minimum rate (currently £21,805 per year), and a research training support grant of up to £2,500 per year for the full 3.5-year programme.
