About the Project
Quantum sensors based on atom interferometry are used as accelerometers, gyroscopes and magnetometers, and there is increasing interest in using them for fundamental science. This includes probes of: astroparticle physics, such as decihertz gravitational waves and certain dark matter models, modifications to Einstein's theory of gravity, and the foundations of quantum mechanics. superposition of quantum states using ultracold atoms, where a measurement of the interference between states reveals differences in their evolution and thus the environment and interactions that they have experienced.
This PhD project combines theory and experiment to explore the optimisation of atom interferometers as quantum sensors, using powerful quantum field theory frameworks to account for decoherence effects and the dynamics of open quantum systems. In addition to practical applications in improving the sensitivity and design of applied quantum sensors, this project will test our textbook knowledge of quantum mechanics in the real world and could rewrite our understanding of fundamental physics.
This project is a 50/50 division between theoretical and experimental work, with equal co-supervision from and membership of specialised theory and experimental teams. We also work closely with collaborators in the international Terrestrial Very-Long Baseline Atom Interferometry collaboration, so team members will routinely work within an innovative interdisciplinary environment. All training is provided, but a successful candidate should have a strong sense of curiosity, attention to detail, and the self-motivation and time management skills to balance the demands of a project that spans a range of theoretical and experimental techniques.
This project is expected to start in September 2027.

Eligibility: The standard academic entry requirement for this PhD is an upper second-class (2:1) honours degree in a discipline directly relevant to the PhD (or international equivalent) OR any upper-second class (2:1) honours degree and a Master's degree at merit in a discipline directly relevant to the PhD (or international equivalent).
