Distributional approximations arise throughout probability and statistics. Here one is interested in approximating the (possibly intractable) distribution of a quantity of interest by a simpler, well-understood distribution, allowing one to make inference. For example, the normal approximation of the standardised sample mean, formalised by the central limit theorem, is one of the most fundamental results in probability and statistics.
