The University of Maryland School of Pharmacy has multiple openings for Peer Tutors to join the Office of Students (formerly Student Affairs) in the Dean's Administration. Peer tutors are selected on the basis of academic skill, competence in the subject matter, character, and interest in helping students. Also, peer tutors are selected on the ability to communicate well with others, manage time, and listen. Tutors are expected to be patient and have extensive knowledge of the subject they are hired to tutor and the ability to communicate subject knowledge to their peers. Peer tutors work individually or in small group sessions with students to answer questions on course content and to aid in comprehension of course material. Peer tutor must meet the following minimum qualifications:
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:
- Be in good standing with the School.
- Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5, with a GPA of 3.0 in subject area tutoring.
- Provide tutoring for a minimum of 2 hours and a maximum of 10 hours per week.
COMPENSATION: $17 per hour.
Selected candidates may be required to participate in an interview or demonstration session.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Tutor up to three tutees on a first come first served basis or small groups, as schedule permits.
- Assist students with understanding of course concepts, homework, and exam preparation.
- Contact assigned tutee(s) within 48 hours and arrange a meeting at a mutually agreed on time and location.
- Provide the tutee(s) with at least 24 hours advanced notice if unable to keep a scheduled tutoring appointment.
- Attend required mandatory scheduled tutor meetings set forth by the Associate Director for the Office of Students.
- Attend training sessions and staff meetings as required.
- Provide the Office of Students with consistent feedback about the tutee's academic progress, study habits, and any issues, which may arise with the tutoring process and program.
- Be evaluated by the tutee(s) and have the evaluation shared with the coursemaster.
- Tutoring feedback will be shared with the Office of Students.
- Submit bi-weekly time sheets that accurately reflect the amount of time spent tutoring.
- Keep accurate records of tutoring sessions and students attendance.
- Non compliance of tutoring will result in termination of contract and coursemaster informed.
- Provide the Office of Students 48 hours written notice to terminate this agreement.
- Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all interactions.
- Promote a positive, encouraging, and inclusive learning environment.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be enrolled as a current student at UM School of Pharmacy.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated patience, adaptability, and a passion for helping others.
- Ability to motivate and engage students of diverse backgrounds.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Dependability and punctuality.
- Ability to explain complex concepts clearly.
- Willingness to learn and improve tutoring techniques.
