The successful appointees will support BIOL1050 Organisms: Interactions and Functions in the delivery of course aims and learning outcomes.  The course is delivered in person at the St Lucia campus. Successful appointees must be available to attend on campus.

Casual Academics are remunerated according to the category of their duties, as detailed in The University of Queensland Enterprise Agreement 2021-2026(Enterprise Agreement) and reiterated in this job profile.

Responsibilities as a Casual Academic may include (but are not limited to):

• Demonstrator support for the conduct of practical and/or workshop classes
• Marking
• Exam invigilation
• Preparation time
• Facilitation of a class activity not requiring the development of materials
• Attendance at induction sessions
• Undertaking of training as required
• Attendance at, or involvement in, other academic activities as directed by the Course Coordinator.

Compliance

All Casual academics are required to comply with legislation and University policy relevant to the duties undertaken, including but not exclusive to:

• The University’s Code of Conduct.
• Requirements of the Queensland occupational health and safety (OH&S) legislation and related OH&S responsibilities and procedures developed by the University or Institute/School.
• The adoption of sustainable practices in all work activities and compliance with associated legislation and related University sustainability responsibilities and procedures.
• Requirements of the Education Services  for Overseas Students Act 2000, the National Code 2007 and associated legislation, and related responsibilities and procedures developed by the University.

About BIOL1050

BIOL1050 Organisms: Interactions and Functions is a new first year biology course commencing Semester 2, 2026. The course is administered by the School of the Environment, and the core teaching team includes academics from the School of the Environment, School of Biomedical Sciences, and School of Agriculture and Food Sustainability. The student learning experience in BIOL1050 includes online self-directed learning modules, a weekly applied learning class (APP), and weekly alternating practicals (PRA) and workshops (WKS). BIOL1050 casual academics will be predominantly involved in PRA and/or WKS learning activities. BIOL1050 brings together the exciting intersection between ecology and physiology to explain the diversity of organisms through the variety of ecological and physiological strategies in response to the environment. Key physiological concepts covered include homeostasis, signalling, respiration, circulation, water balance, digestion and reproduction. Key ecological concepts covered include responding to the abiotic and biotic environment, symbiotic interactions, and population growth (including reproductive strategies). BIOL1050 explores these concepts through major plant, animal (and human) systems.

About You

You must possess at least an undergraduate degree majoring in the discipline in which you seek to deliver content. You will either have relatively recent experience with the course material or a demonstrated capacity to become familiar with the material in a short time.

We welcome expressions of interest from PhD, Masters by Research and Honours candidates.  Postgraduate coursework students with completion of at least one semester of full-time study are also eligible to apply.

What we can offer

These are casual academic appointments. As such, there is no firm advance commitment to ongoing or indefinite work. The casual rate will vary depending on the type of work completed. Please view our various casual academic pay scales.  Most casual academics rates will be within the AC30 and AC50 pay scales.
