About the Role

The Research Fellow will join the Diamond and Atomic Quantum Technologies Lab in the School of Physics, leading experiments that apply optical microscopy, quantum sensing, and electrical measurements to explore charge carrier dynamics in wide-bandgap materials like diamond and silicon carbide.

The role requires a highly motivated and innovative researcher with strong experimental skills, capable of working independently and collaboratively within an internationally competitive research environment. The Fellow will also engage in collaborative efforts with both theorists and experimentalists across the School.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • You are expected to significantly contribute towards the research effort of the team and to develop your research expertise with an increasing degree of autonomy.
  • Under the guidance and support of Senior Academic staff conduct internationally competitive research, resulting in publications in high impact journals.
  • Contribute to and publish academic papers and other scholarly outputs to a high academic standard in accordance with the research expectations of the University of Melbourne.
  • Actively participate in research seminars and conferences to disseminate research findings as opportunities arise.
  • Contribute to the preparation, or where appropriate individual preparation of research proposal submissions to internal or external funding bodies as relevant.

Who We Are Looking For

You will have strong theoretical skills and a proven ability to apply theoretical models to experimental results, coupled with a demonstrated aptitude for research and a solid track record in relevant areas, reflecting your experience and opportunities.

You will also have:

  • A PhD or equivalent in a relevant area of experimental physics (condensed matter or quantum physics) or electronic engineering (focusing on quantum materials, solid-state electronic devices or similar).
  • Research experience in optical or electronic characterisation of materials
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare research reports and manuscripts for publication.
  • Highly desirable: experience with wide-bandgap materials, especially SiC and experience with nano/micro fabrication.

This role requires that the successful candidate must undergo and maintain an up-to-date Working with Children Check. This is essential to guarantee a secure environment for all individuals at the University. In the case the selected candidate doesn't have a valid Working with Children Check, they will be able to apply for the WWCC as part of the initial onboarding procedures.
