Position Summary

The Ehrt and Schnappinger laboratories at Weill Cornell Medicine seek a Scientific Administrator to support research in microbial pathogenesis, antibacterial drug development, genomics, and immunology. Reporting to Dr. Sabine Ehrt (Professor and Chair) and Dr. Dirk Schnappinger (Professor), the Scientific Administrator will coordinate scientific and administrative activities across both laboratories.

The role centers on project oversight, grant development, and scientific communication. Key activities include assigning responsibilities within research teams, monitoring progress on multiple concurrent projects, drafting progress reports, and assisting with new grant proposals. The position requires discretion with confidential information, strong organizational skills, and the ability to represent laboratory leadership in internal and external communications.

Job Responsibilities

  • Works closely with leadership to set and execute on departmental priorities; prioritizes own tasks, and conducts daily briefings to synthesize and prioritize key information.
  • Manages and coordinates multiple, highly complex research projects. Follows project life-cycle from planning/initiation to completion. Keeps all participants and stakeholders informed of any issues and risks might impact scope, schedule, quality and cost.
  • Assists in the writing and production of new grant applications and competing renewal grant applications to government, foundations, and industrial sponsors.
  • Assists in developing the budget required for grants. Prepares and compiles reports on project budget and finances, operations, and/or scientific progress.
  • Drafts annual and other periodic scientific programs reports for non-competing renewals of governmental, foundation, and industrial grants and sponsored programs. Assists in researching and drafting large sections of invited review articles.
  • Designs and manages the creation and implementation of data collection systems for departmental research projects. Oversees the development, implementation of their use and monitors the databases for the collection and analysis of study data.
  • Assists with fundraising efforts and serves as key team member for grant and research project proposal development.
  • Responsible for the department's incoming and outgoing Material Transfer Agreements (MTA) and Confidential Disclosure Agreements (CDA).
  • Supports senior leadership in cultivation of relationships with strategic partners and other stakeholders. Serves as a representative of senior leaders in dealings with both internal and external communications.
  • Performs literature searches and compiles scientific information.
  • Performs other position related duties as required.

Education

  • Master's Degree

Experience

Approximately 6+ years of research experience (i.e. academia, non-profit, pharma / biotech, or government).

Experience with clinical research management highly desired.

Knowledge of virology, gene therapy, and next generation sequencing technologies a plus.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Proficiency in computers (WordPerfect, Microsoft Office, and other database packages).
  • Sound business judgment and well-developed planning, problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Excellent communication and inter-personal skills, coupled with extraordinary skills at presenting data in a clear and compelling manner.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Ability to make quick, solid decisions with confidence in order to expertly field both internal and external business requests.
  • Ability to work independently and shift priorities in an ever-changing work environment to get things done quickly and accurately.
