Job Summary

The Caltech Optical Imaging Laboratory in the Department of Medical Engineering seeks an experienced biomedical engineer to lead the translation of biomedical imaging techniques, particularly in photoacoustic imaging, toward commercialization. The primary goal of this program is to translate lab-demonstrated scientific techniques into viable commercial products. The successful candidate will work closely with the principal investigator (PI) and the photoacoustic imaging team to accelerate this translation process, including technology development, regulatory considerations, and industry partnerships.

Essential Job Duties

  • Collaborate with the principal investigator (PI) and photoacoustic imaging team to drive the commercialization of advanced biomedical imaging techniques, with a focus on photoacoustic imaging technologies.
  • Identify and pursue funding opportunities and collaborations with universities, government agencies, and industry partners to support and expedite the translation of lab-developed technologies to market.
  • Enhance and optimize existing hardware and software systems to meet commercial product standards, ensuring scalability, reliability, and user accessibility.
  • Oversee the product development process, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards (e.g., FDA requirements) and coordinating with relevant stakeholders to achieve market readiness.
  • Design and develop next-generation imaging systems by incorporating market feedback, clinical needs, and emerging technological advancements.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as assigned, including project management, documentation, and coordination with cross-functional teams to support the laboratory's mission.

Basic Qualifications

  • PhD in biomedical engineering, optical engineering, electrical engineering, or a closely related field, with specialized expertise in photoacoustic imaging or advanced optical imaging technologies.
  • Relevant industry experience in the development, testing, or commercialization of medical devices, preferably in imaging or diagnostic systems.
  • Proven ability to work independently, manage complex projects with minimal supervision, and deliver results in a fast-paced, interdisciplinary environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Established record of research excellence, evidenced by high-impact publications, patents, or successful projects in photoacoustic imaging or related fields.
  • Knowledge of regulatory standards and processes for medical devices (e.g., FDA, ISO 13485), with experience in navigating compliance requirements.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with a demonstrated ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams, including researchers, clinicians, and industry partners.
  • Enthusiasm for working in a dynamic, entrepreneurial environment, with an interest in contributing to start-up initiatives or technology transfer.
