The Department of Otolaryngology at the University of Wisconsin–Madison invites applications for a Scientist III position to support our growing research portfolio in hearing, voice, balance, and head and neck disease. The Scientist III will lead and support advanced scientific research projects focused on head and neck disorders, auditory and vestibular function, and related clinical and translational studies. The incumbent will design and conduct experiments, develop and optimize methodologies, analyze and interpret complex datasets, and contribute to high-impact publications and grant proposals. This role requires independent initiative as well as close collaboration with faculty, clinicians, trainees, and multidisciplinary research teams. The Scientist III will also provide mentorship to junior researchers, oversee laboratory operations, and ensure compliance with institutional, federal, and ethical research standards.

Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Identifies research problems and develops highly complex research methodologies and procedures. Publishes and presents results to help advance research.
  • May supervise the day-to-day activities of a research unit and staff and resolve routine personnel issues.
  • Identifies, writes, or assists in developing grant opportunities, grant applications, and proposals to secure research funding.
  • Attends and assists with the facilitation of scholarly events and presentations in support of continued professional development and the dissemination of research information.
  • Conducts literature reviews, prepares reports and materials, and disseminates information to appropriate entities.
  • Monitors program budget and approves unit expenditures.
  • Collects and analyzes highly complex research data, conducts experiments and interviews, and documents results according to established policies and procedures.
  • Serves as an institutional subject matter expert and liaison with key internal and external stakeholders providing expert level information and representing the interests of a specialized research area.

Department: School of Medicine and Public Health, Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Dr. David Zopf Research Lab. The Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health is renowned for its cutting-edge clinical care, pioneering research, and comprehensive surgical training.

Compensation: The starting salary for this position is $76,289 but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications. Employees in this position can expect to receive benefits such as generous vacation, holidays, and sick leave; competitive insurances and savings accounts; retirement benefits.

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience managing complex projects that involve multiple principal investigators, sites, institutions, and/or public health practice settings.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office 365 and basic computer programs (e.g., Teams, Sharepoint, OneNote, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe, Google, etc.).
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and interact professionally with study participants, external collaborators, and diverse stakeholders.
  • A minimum of 3 years of professional research experience (academic, industry, government, nonprofit, technical/laboratory).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience providing support to multidisciplinary teams.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills, including the ability to work independently, delegate, and oversee tasks.
  • Ability to follow research protocols or other detailed procedures consistently and accurately, with a high level of attention to detail.
  • Experience using clinical and/or social science research methods and patient recruitment.
  • Experience with or willing to learn to use electronic health record systems, such as REDCap.
  • Computer literacy for literature searches, data entry, data management, data tabulation, statistical analysis, and data presentation in tabular and graphic formats.
  • Previous supervisory experience, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours.

Education: PhD in Biomedical Engineering or related field is required.
