According to World Bank data, more than 84% percent of the UK population live in densely populated cities. However, the complexity of modern urban environments presents a challenge: seamless navigation for residents, tourists, and emergency services.
While satellite navigation systems (such as GPS) play a crucial rule for providing localisation and tracking capabilities for a wide variety of applications in open, outdoor areas, they fall short in indoor or underground environments due to the weak nature of the signals that are easily blocked by buildings and other obstacles.
The "Seamless Indoor-Outdoor Navigation for Smart Cities" project at the University of Portsmouth embarks on a transformative journey to redefine how individuals and services navigate our evolving urban landscapes.
From towering skyscrapers to huge airports and shopping centres and from underground metro networks to crowded open streets, this project addresses the current challenges facing individuals and businesses that need navigation services in both indoor and outdoor environments.
The project will investigate cutting-edge tracking and locating technologies that allow outdoor navigation capabilities enjoyed by many to be expanded to the indoor and underground environments. A comprehensive indoor navigation system accessible through mobile applications, that can provide active, seamless navigation in both contrasting environments.
