About the Role
This is an exciting opportunity to take on a pivotal role as a Library Service Officer within the University of Melbourne. In this role, you will serve as the welcoming face of the University Library, providing invaluable support to students and staff. You'll have the chance to continuously improve service standards, contribute to collection management, and enhance scholarly literacy services, all while playing a crucial role in facilitating learning, teaching, and research activities across campus.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Provide high quality, and continuously improved library frontline services through the following channels: face-to-face (e.g. service point); online (e.g. chat and email); and telephone and escalate queries when necessary
- Conduct effective reference interviews to perform and interpret searches for resource discovery using scholarly information resources including databases and discovery systems.
- Triage information and circulation queries, and judge when referral is necessary within agreed service frameworks
Who we are looking for
The ideal candidate possesses strong verbal and written communication skills, be emotionally intelligent, and have excellent interpersonal and negotiation abilities. They can work well in a team, take initiative with minimal supervision, and maintain strong client relationships while delivering outstanding customer service. Requirements include a Diploma in Library/Information Studies (LIS), eligibility for Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) membership, library technician-level skills and knowledge, and relevant tertiary qualifications or equivalent education and experience.

This role requires the successful candidate to undergo and maintain an up-to-date Working with Children Check. This is essential to guarantee a secure environment for all individuals at the University. In the case the selected candidate doesn't have a valid Working with Children Check, they will be able to apply for the WWCC as part of the initial onboarding procedures.
