The Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery in the Department of Surgery in the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University is currently seeking a faculty member to serve as Section Chief at the rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Professor. The Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery will provide overall leadership for the cardiothoracic surgery program and report directly to the Chair of the Department of Surgery. This individual will devote approximately 90% of clinical effort to program-related activities and maintain operative privileges at Wellstar MCG Health. This position does not meet the requirements to be on a tenure track.
Responsibilities
Clinical Duties- 90% Research & Education- 10%
The Chief will oversee the cardiac surgery service, including patient evaluation and surgical acceptance, postoperative care oversight, management of the attending physician call schedule, and development of clinical protocols. Responsibilities also include oversight of clinical outcomes, physician professionalism, morbidity and mortality review, and quality improvement initiatives.
Working collaboratively with Wellstar MCG Health leadership, the Chief will support community outreach, program development, education, and fundraising efforts. The Chief will partner with cardiology and anesthesia leadership to ensure coordinated, high-quality care for cardiac surgery patients.
Additional responsibilities include supporting clinical research activities and supervising students and trainees rotating through the cardiac surgery service. The Chief will maintain compliance with all medical staff requirements necessary to preserve privileges in good standing at Wellstar MCG Health.
Required Qualifications
- MD, DO or equivalent from an accredited institution
- Minimum of 5 years' Cardiothoracic Surgery experience
- Board Certified in Surgery and CT Surgery
- Board eligible in general surgery
- Board-Certified or Board Eligible (ABTS)
- Fellowship trained in Cardiothoracic Surgery
Assistant Professor- Early level career as a faculty member with appropriate post graduate training.
Associate Professor- Mid level career faculty member with at least five years at rank of Assistant Professor or comparable training, background, and experience.
Professor- Senior level career faculty member with at least five years at the rank of Associate Professor or comparable training, background, and experience.
Required faculty employment qualifications for all USG institutions and all academic ranks within these institutions shall be: Consistent with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC)'s requirements for institutional accreditation; Evidence of ability as a teacher; Evidence of activity as a scholar and ability in all other duties assigned; Successful experience (which will necessarily be waived for those just entering the academic profession who meet all other requirements); and, Desirable personal qualities judged on the basis of personal interview, complete biographical data, and recommendations.
