Security Center Representative

Job Description

The Public Safety Division has a critical role in supporting the well-being of our community. Comprised of the Police Department, Environmental Health & Safety, the Office of Emergency Management, and the Virginia Tech Rescue Squad, we are committed to fostering a safe and supportive environment for all students, faculty, staff, and visitors that maximizes everyone's opportunity for success. Through collaboration, dedication, training, and community engagement, we strive to provide a comprehensive and responsive approach in our public safety programs. Our mission of advancing safety, security, health and preparedness is anchored by the Virginia Tech Principles of Community. These fundamental values: mutual respect, civility, and service, are foundational to our programs and are exemplified in our interactions with the campus community.

Security Center Representatives provide security, safety, and community services to University employees, students, and visitors.

As a Security Center Representative, the incumbent is responsible for monitoring and utilizing the campus video surveillance system to deter and provide information regarding criminal and safety incidents, activating the University's emergency notification system, answers calls on the department's main line, and provides assistance or forwards call to the Regional 911 Center as needed, monitors direct and silent emergency alarms notifying responsible parties, and answers non-emergency calls for assistance. The incumbent enters, updates, and retrieves information from various computer systems, receives requests for information regarding vehicle registration, driving records and warrants, student information, and parking information, and provides pertinent data. They also monitor several complex public safety radio frequencies, operate various communications equipment, including radio consoles, telephones, and computer systems, and perform clerical and typing duties as required.

Incumbents may assist in providing on-the-job training for other Security Center Representatives and submit progress reports and evaluations on trainees.

Security Center positions are designated by the university as essential to university operations. As emergency personnel, incumbents are required to report to work during emergency situations, authorized closings, and adverse weather conditions.

The incumbents also perform other duties as requested; take initiative to support a healthy work environment; strive to fulfill the terms in the Standards of Business Conduct; exemplify Virginia Tech's Principles of Community; and support the university's motto, Ut Prosim (That I May Serve).
