Job Preview

Hopedale Medical Complex is seeking a dependable and safety-minded Security Officer to help maintain a safe and secure environment for our patients, residents, visitors, employees, and facilities.

The Security Officer provides an important presence throughout the HMC campus and is responsible for routine security patrols, monitoring surveillance equipment, responding to alarms and calls for assistance, identifying potential safety or security concerns, and taking appropriate action in accordance with HMC policies and procedures.

This position is well suited for someone who is observant, dependable, comfortable working independently, and able to remain calm and professional when responding to unexpected situations. The Security Officer works closely with HMC staff and departments to support a safe environment throughout the organization.

Schedule

Night Shift: 6:00 p.m. – 6:00 a.m.

The position requires availability to work scheduled night shifts, including weekends and holidays as assigned.

Because Security provides coverage throughout the overnight hours, the ability to remain alert, attentive, and responsive throughout the shift is essential.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Security and Patrol

  • Conduct random security patrols of the HMC campus and designated outlying properties.

  • Perform random, alternating interior and exterior security checks of the HMC campus at least three times per shift.

  • Observe buildings, grounds, entrances, parking areas, and other assigned locations for unusual conditions or potential security concerns.

  • Identify and report damage, hazards, suspicious activity, safety concerns, or unusual conditions that may present a threat to patients, residents, visitors, employees, or HMC property.

  • Respond promptly to calls for security assistance and determine an appropriate course of action.

  • Respond to security, fire, emergency, and other alarms and take appropriate action.

  • Monitor video surveillance equipment and report unusual or suspicious activity as appropriate.

  • Escort employees to and from work areas when requested and as circumstances permit.

  • Initiate a facility-wide or “group page” when appropriate and assist HMC departments as needed.

Safety and Environmental Support

  • Assist with designated maintenance checks and limited Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) tasks.

  • Perform monthly fire extinguisher inspections and document results.

  • Report safety hazards, damaged equipment, environmental concerns, or other conditions requiring attention.

  • Assist in maintaining a safe and secure environment throughout HMC facilities and grounds.

Administrative and Other Responsibilities

  • Remove trash from designated areas, including the Administration Building and Daycare, as assigned.

  • Change I.S. backup tapes on Saturdays and Sundays as assigned.

  • Complete security reports, incident reports, inspection records, and other required documentation accurately and thoroughly.

  • Maintain confidentiality of information encountered while performing job duties.

  • Communicate professionally and respectfully with patients, residents, visitors, employees, physicians, and other individuals.

  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.

  • Basic understanding of security practices and procedures.

  • Ability to follow written, verbal, and diagrammatic instructions.

  • Ability to observe and recognize conditions, hazards, or activities that may present a safety or security concern.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally, both verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to accurately document work performed, observations, inspections, and incidents.

  • Ability to remain calm and exercise sound judgment when responding to security concerns or emergency situations.

  • Ability to work independently and remain attentive during overnight hours.

  • Ability to work effectively with patients, residents, visitors, employees, and other members of the HMC team.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate professionalism at all times.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in security, healthcare security, public safety, military, law enforcement, emergency services, or a related field.

  • Previous experience in a healthcare or patient-care environment.

  • Familiarity with video surveillance systems, alarm systems, or other security equipment.

  • CPR/AED certification or ability to obtain certification upon hire.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to frequently stand and walk throughout the workday while conducting patrols and security checks.

  • Ability to sit, reach with hands and arms, and use hands and fingers to handle, feel, operate, and control equipment and security devices.

  • Ability to climb stairs and perform activities requiring bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling as necessary.

  • Ability to maintain balance while walking, standing, climbing stairs, and performing security-related activities.

  • Ability to push, pull, lift, and move equipment, supplies, carts, or other items as required.

  • Ability to regularly lift and carry up to 50 pounds.

  • Ability to push, pull, lift, and/or move loads of up to 100 pounds with appropriate assistance or equipment when available.

  • Ability to communicate effectively through talking and hearing, including during emergency or security situations.

  • Ability to see objects at close and distant ranges and demonstrate adequate color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

  • Ability to respond promptly and appropriately to emergency situations and security calls.

Work Environment

Work is performed throughout the HMC campus and may include patient-care areas, administrative offices, parking areas, buildings, grounds, and other HMC properties.

The position involves frequent movement throughout the facility and regular exposure to indoor and outdoor environments, including varying temperatures and occasional inclement weather.

The Security Officer may encounter cleaning chemicals, hazardous materials, bodily fluids, or other potentially hazardous substances while responding to incidents or performing assigned duties. Appropriate safety procedures and personal protective equipment (PPE) must be used as required.

The position involves interaction with patients, residents, visitors, employees, physicians, vendors, and members of the public. The Security Officer may encounter individuals experiencing illness, emotional distress, confusion, or other challenging circumstances.

Background Check and Drug Screen

All HMC employees are required to successfully complete applicable federal and state background checks and a pre-employment drug and alcohol screening.

HMC's drug screening process includes testing for substances prohibited under HMC policy, including cannabis (THC), consistent with applicable law and organizational requirements.
