Appointment: Regular, full-time (1.0 FTE) position. 8am - 4pm Tuesday through Saturday.
Work Location: This position is based in Tacoma, WA, and is an on-campus role only.

Position Summary

All Security Services staff members genuinely care for the community, are actively engaged, and demonstrate the high values of the university and department through their daily work. Additionally, they understand their work supports and affirms the mission of the institution.

Security Services provides security and related services to the University of Puget Sound community. The position manages all office related and record keeping activities during regular business hours and supervises, assigns work, and evaluates the operations support assistant and approximately 2 or 3 part-time work-study students. Daily work includes managing campus parking registration and enforcement, key control programs, on-line door scheduling and access, lost and found, and room reservation requests. The position also assists in maintaining and assigning access to department software and must demonstrate an understanding of specific software applications used by the department. The position also provides administrative project support to the director and performs other general office duties as necessary.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities

  • Manages the university key control program including billing, inventory for all academic and residential keys, and key requests for faculty, staff and students. Works closely with the university locksmith on key issues and re-keys.
  • Oversees the university parking program, including the issuance of decals, weekly citation billing, and ordering supplies.
  • Works closely with other departments to set building schedules for academic buildings on campus and programs on-line doors daily.
  • Assigns building card access to campus community members as necessary. Researches card access system malfunctions and leads troubleshooting efforts in coordination with Technology Services, the university locksmith, or the director of security.
  • Organizes room reservation requests into security database for patrol staff to use after-hours.
  • Requests and coordinates repair of department computer hardware and software to the Business Services Technology Coordinator or to the Technology Services department as necessary.
  • Dispatches via two-way radio on-duty officers to routine, priority, and emergency calls for assistance.
  • Manages/approves student staff payroll and serves as the liaison between Security and Career and Employment Services to include work awards and position allocations.
  • Performs general office duties; filing, data entry, facilities repair requests, answers telephone and provides general office support.
  • Provides front counter support to assist customers as needed.
  • Directly supervises the operations support assistant and two or three part-time work-study students.
  • Regular and predictable attendance at assigned shifts and department trainings and meetings is required and an essential function of the position.
  • Is designated as a Campus Security Authority and is required to report known campus-related crimes to Security Services.
  • Respond to emergency and urgent situations outside of scheduled work hours, including when the university is under modified operations.
  • Commitment to serve fairly, protect, and communicate, within a diverse campus community.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities

The position supervises the full-time operations support assistant and 2-3 part-time work-study students.

Budget Responsibilities

The position manages department operational funds related to administrative operations, codes all invoices, and submits for payment.

The position must be a good steward of university and department resources.

Qualifications

Candidates must be able to explain and/or demonstrate that they possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities to safely perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Associate degree in Business Administration, Emergency Management, Criminal Justice, or other related field of study is preferred.
  • Three or more years of related work experience.
  • Experience with PeopleSoft or other oracle programs is desirable.
  • Extensive experience with card access and electronic control systems is required.
  • Proficient user of computers and computer software.
  • Prior working experience with databases (Access control, Oracle, Boss, etc.)
  • Strong critical thinking, debugging and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize work flow.
  • Ability to work in fast paced work environment.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to form effective working relationships with multiple constituent groups.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Valid/Ability to obtain Washington State driver's license and First Aid and CPR certifications.
  • Ability to respectfully work, communicate and provide leadership within a diverse campus community.

Compensation and Benefits

The anticipated range for this position is $24.87 up to $25.38 for an experienced employee in this role. Decisions about starting salaries are made based on the extent and relatedness of the candidate's education and experience and on internal equity and market considerations.

-Temporary positions that work at least .50 FTE (1,040 hours per year) will be eligible for benefits.

This position is non-exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
