Provide strategic direction, leadership, and oversight of financial operations for multiple finance and/or operational functions.
Job Specific Responsibilities
Reporting to the Director of Athletics and as a member of the Athletics Department Leadership team, the Senior Associate Director of Athletics – Finance and Administration provides operational strategic direction, leadership and oversight of finance, budgeting, payroll management, and resource allocation for the Athletics Department. This role partners closely with FAS Finance, FAS HR, Office of the General Counsel, Strategic Procurement and Harvard Risk Management to ensure Harvard Athletics is compliant with all financial and administrative policies. Directly oversees the Finance Office.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Serves as the Athletics Department’s Chief Financial Officer and directs the department’s financial operations ensuring financial management of $70M annual activity-based operating budget including financial accounting on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis; financial planning and analysis including annual budgets, forecasts, and long-range planning as well as financial reporting and modeling; financial operations including payroll, accounts receivable, accounts payable and reimbursements.
- Directs the development and implementation of capital budget projects ranging from $1M to $25M. Oversees capital project approval process ensuring adequate funding and monitoring of project costs.
- Directs annual operating budget process including development of budget targets, budget review meetings with all coaches and administrators, and final budget approval.
- Assists the Director of Athletics in the strategic planning of department financial matters and makes recommendations based on resources and priorities.
- Oversees evaluation of financial proposals for new FTEs and departmental initiatives.
- Oversees monthly, quarterly, annual, and multi-year financial statement preparation and reporting. Establishes department metrics to evaluate and measure program performance. Monitors activity-based results to ensure financial viability and budget accountability.
- Oversees the annual NCAA audit and the Department of Education Equity in Athletics Disclosure Act report filing.
- Oversees and monitors internal audit project results.
- Oversees financial training for coaches and administrators.
- Presents department financial information to internal and external constituencies.
- Directly supervises the Finance Office staff. Attracts, develops, and retains outstanding people who directly support coaches and student athletes.
- Partners with Deputy Director of Athletics - External Operations to establish, track, and report on financial metrics and key performance indicators aligned with strategic revenue goals.
- Represents the Athletics Department as a member of the FAS Administrative Advisory Board, FAS Administrative Council and FAS Tub Financial Officers Committee.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting. Evening and weekend time will be required occasionally for special athletics and alumni events.
Qualifications
- Basic Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience required, Minimum of 10 years’ relevant work experience, Supervisory experience.
- Additional Qualifications and Skills: MBA or Master's degree in relevant field, CPA preferred, Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, advanced excel skills, Knowledge of advanced financial administration principles, Excellent interpersonal and communication skills essential, Strong customer service orientation and collaborative work style, Thorough knowledge of accounting theory and practice, Demonstrated ability in creative problem solving.
