Position Purpose

The Civil Engineer participates in all aspects of the day-to-day operations of the Dartmouth College Engineering Office. The Engineering Office strives to provide high quality engineering services for a wide range of projects and clients, including working with Project Managers on capital projects, in-house design projects, working with Facilities’ Maintenance and Grounds Services on operational issues, and providing technical review and oversight of projects designed by outside consultants. The activities of the Civil Engineer include design reviews, field investigations, preparation and/or review of permitting documents, site, grading, water, sewer and stormwater management design and review, campus underground utility mapping, preparation of technical specifications, drafting, code review, use of engineering software, construction administration services, and development and continuous improvement of campus Design and Construction Guidelines.

Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering, or the equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • Registered Professional Civil Engineer in the State of New Hampshire with a minimum of ten (10) years of experience.
  • Extensive analytical, design and field experience in general civil infrastructure, including water, sewer, and storm drainage systems, and familiarity with their operation.
  • Experience in utility distribution operations & maintenance.
  • Proficiency in personal computer systems and software (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and infrastructure-related software (e.g., AutoCAD Civil 3D).
  • Proficiency with ArcGIS software.
  • Exceptional organizational, interpersonal, leadership and verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to relate well with a diverse group of constituents and to build strong relationships within and among those groups.
  • Strong service orientation and a demonstrated desire to continually improve the service and operations of an organization.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 15 years of progressively responsible engineering and experience in drainage, water, and sewer systems, including planning, hydraulic calculations, preparation of plans and specifications, project management, and construction inspection.
  • Experience with engineering flow/hydraulic software modeling systems (e.g., EPANET, KYPipe, SewerGEMS); ability to develop and/or update existing models for water, sewer, and storm.
  • Active LEED BD+C AP certification.

Key Accountabilities

Owner’s Engineer (65%)

  • Collaborate and coordinate tasks with project stakeholders including operational staff, project management staff, the broader campus community, and project personnel such as landscape architects, outside engineers, contractors, and regulatory agencies on complex engineering projects and operational issues.
  • Determine or review the design approach, procedures, and criteria at all stages from basis of design through construction documents for academic, athletic, administrative, residential, commercial, institutional mixed-use, and/or assigned phases of large land/site development.
  • Provide technical assistance in the resolution of design and/or operational problems that may include performing field investigation or observations, detailed design work and calculations, and detailed checking of design computations done by others, or general coordination of specific design aspects of a project.
  • Plan, schedule, conduct, and/or coordinate assigned project work to meet project goals, schedules, and budgets.
  • Complete design work and calculations using computer-aided software such as AutoCad Civil 3D.
  • Analysis and design of various sized drainage engineering projects. This includes hydrology and hydraulic analysis and design for parking lot and street drainage and modeling of floodplain hydraulics.
  • Work on stormwater quality projects including the design of green infrastructure and other best management practices for stormwater control and treatment, erosion and sediment control design, and compliance and permitting documentation.
  • Prepare reports and correspondence concerning the direction and/or recommendations of assigned projects and field observations.
  • Review and/or prepare plans, technical specifications, drainage reports, engineering cost estimates, project schedules, and contract documents.

Engineering Design and Construction Administration (10%)

  • Provides engineering design and construction administration services for a variety of projects. Prepares bid documents including drawings and specifications. Construction administration services include shop drawing review, attendance at project meetings, clarification of installation details with contractors in the field, review of as-built documentation and archiving, and conducting field inspections with reports.

Campus Underground Utility Mapping (10%)

  • Participate in the process of identifying, documenting, and updating the location of underground utilities, including data collection, use of Geographic Information System (GIS) software (ArcGIS), data management, and coordination with Dig Safe.

Campus Design and Construction Guidelines (5%)

  • Participates in continuous improvement of campus design and construction guidelines for designers and contractors doing work on the campus.

Safety (5%)

  • Cultivate and promote a culture of safety where the emphasis on safety is ingrained in every aspect of the workplace.
  • Commit to the culture of safety by following safety procedures, reporting hazards and unsafe behaviors, and participating in safety training, meetings, and audits. Take personal ownership of safety responsibilities.
