Job description:
The Role
We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Senior Electrical Technician to join our technical team, supporting both teaching and research activities within the School of Engineering.
Based across a range of laboratories and workshops, you will play a vital role in delivering high quality technical support for electrical and electronic engineering. Reporting to the Technical Team Leader and the School Technical Manager, you may also be responsible for supervising other technical staff within your area.
You will work alongside a team of electrical and electronic technicians, supporting the operation, maintenance, and development of laboratory spaces and equipment. This includes systems involving batteries, instrumentation, motors, drives, and both electronic and electrical control systems.
Key responsibilities include:
- Providing technical support for teaching and research activities
- Repairing, designing, and supporting equipment related to single and three-phase control systems, process control, motors, drives, and electronics
- Delivering training to staff and students on the safe use of laboratory test equipment
- Designing, building, and modifying electrical test rigs
- Applying knowledge of electrical power systems and associated safety devices
- Interpreting and working from electrical wiring diagrams, including safety and emergency stop circuitry
- Supporting work with motors, drives, and electrical machines
- Using CAD and other engineering software (good IT skills essential)
Desirable
- Experience with lithium batteries and motor drive systems
Qualifications and Skills:
- A Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Electrical or Electronic Engineering (or equivalent Level 4 qualification)
- Strong customer focus and a proactive approach to technical service delivery
- Ability to work flexibly, efficiently, and collaboratively with academic and technical colleagues
Please note: This is not an electrical installation role, you will not be involved in installing building electrical systems or carrying out site-based electrical work. We are therefore keen to hear from skilled electricians capable of designing and supporting a variety of teaching equipment and research rigs within the School of Engineering.
Occasionally the role may involve work outside normal hours to ensure teaching is fully supported with time off in lieu provided.
Informal enquiries can be made to the Technical operations manager Stephen Robson at stephen.robson@ncl.ac.uk, or Technical Team Leader Roy Proud at roy.proud@ncl.ac.uk.
To apply, please submit an online application including your CV and a cover letter outlining how you meet the essential criteria for this role.
