Applications are invited for a temporary post of a Senior Energy Policy Researcher within the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering
Investments in future generation and storage assets can be strongly influenced by their potential location. Being subject to resource potential, environmental constraints, social acceptance and planning frameworks, the determination of plausible sites for power and energy assets is multi-faceted and typically asset specific.
However, it is not always typical for long-term system planning models to consider how locational aspects affect a candidate investment asset's resource potential, cost or return on investment, as well as the knock-on implications for the wider system. Furthermore, non-consideration of spatial constraints can hide potential land-use conflicts.
This post will develop comprehensive spatial datasets for a set of key future power and energy technologies in Ireland and automated workflow routines to explore how these spatial considerations affect long-term decarbonisation pathways for Ireland's power system using Spine tools. The model will form part of an integrated energy system analysis framework aligned with SEAI's national energy modelling efforts.
